I have devoured this thread - read every post - WHY HAVE I NOT HEARD OF THIS BEFORE??? I retired my best trail horse due to arthritis in his hocks and navicular changes - I just texted my vet and she said she loves the stuff - she sells it for $145 for the 50ml (so no getting a script for it) and is bringing to me on Friday!!! I miss my old friend and am sooo excited to see if this will help him. He’s been on Previcox and was at my gf’s rescue since the spring as a little kids lesson horse - which he loved - but he’s loosing weight and I want him off the NASID. Thank you all for posting about your experiences!!! I’m a COTH fan for sure now!!!
Lambee, you can order directly from Wedgewood for $119 plus $10 shipping, though I totally understand if you’re willing to pay a bit more to ensure that the vet/client relationship runs smoothly!

Good luck! I’m not sure if It will do anything for navicular but it’s worth a try.

So just when I think my prayers were answered, I’m confused again. For the last year I’ve done a TON of reading on Pentosan vs Adequan. I really am leaning toward Pentosan because of the feedback of others and the cost factor. My vet would not give a script for it though and then Adequan was not available. UGhH!
So I have a new Vet and YES! They will prescribe me Pentosan…but they told me there is no loading dose, just give 5cc’s a week, every week. I have never heard this method before…plus my horse is about 1200lbs. I thought for sure I’d give 6cc’s. Has anyone given a horse of that size just 5cc’s and it work? My horse is an OTTB with 64 races in his past and about 14 yrs old now. What do you think? Everyone I see on here is giving the 6cc’s. I also can’t imagine giving it weekly, my thoughts were- loading dose of 6cc’s weekly, for 4 wks. Then 6cc’s every 2-4 wks thereafter.

Well, one thing is that you have to make sure you are talking the same concentration – what I am using, and the ā€œstandardā€ I think, is 250 mg/ml – and with that, I give 6 cc. I don’t know if it varies based on size of horse as my little guy (15.3 and maybe 1,150 lbs.) gets same as the big guy (16.3 and 1,350 lbs.). I have used the loading dose of 6 cc every 4 days for 4 doses, then go monthly. Some people found they had better results going every two weeks after the loading dose. I’ve heard other vets use a different loading dose protocol, a series of 4 shots given once a week, but I’m not sure why the instructions differ. I’m just following the direction from my vet, and it seemed to do well for my guys.

So what exactly would my question to the vet be to verify the amount he’d be getting per dose?

I got my Pentosan in today for the first time, shipped from Wedgewood. I haven’t started my horse on it yet because I have questions first. I have the usual bottle of 250 mg/ml formulation in a 100 ml bottle. When I did my math, after loading dose and 2x month injections thereafter, this bottle was going to last me roughly 6 mos+ for how often I was going to give it. (The 50 ml was selling for $150 and the 100ml for $197 so I got the bigger bottle, made sense I thought)
Well, the bottle expiration date is 1/25/15. That’s only 3.5 mos from now. I’m losing 6 doses if I stop using it on the expiration date. Is this a typical shelf life? Did I make a big mistake in assuming I’d have at least 6 mos. shelf life?
What can or should I do? Will it be ok to give after expiration date? Anyone have advice?

I would call Wedgewood and see what they say. I’m not a doctor or vet, but I think that, generally, meds can still be effective after the expiration date, but will begin to lose their potency as time goes on. I would be interested to hear what Wedgewood tells you; will you please update us?

I have not heard of the dosage that your vet has recommended. Perhaps you can ask them to explain? My horse is also around 1200 lbs and I put him on the loading dose of 6cc once a week for 4 weeks, and now give him 6 ccs once every 3-3.5 weeks. (I started at once every 4 weeks, but it seemed that he would be a little stiff at the very end of that time, so I started giving a few days earlier.) I did pretty extensive research before starting Pentosan, and everything supported this dosage timing.
This summer my vet told me that the shelf life had been extended on the Pentosan he orders from…shoot, not at the barn right now, but it has Wyck in the name. Anway, before this they had a very short expiration date and he had told me to keep it in the refrigerator and as long as it did not turn dark brown, it was still useable after the expiration date. I do not know how accurate this is, but I always refrigerate it and it has never turned dark brown so I keep using it. Maybe it never does, hahaha.

Currently Wedgewood won’t work with me. Since my vet called it in, they will only speak to her regarding this matter. So I left her a message…
As I told them, the math on dosages prescribed + the size of the bottle + average shelf life of 6 mos, I would have been fine with the bottle. Frustrating

Well I just have to say I LOVE MY VET! She’s the bomb! She’s calling Wedgewood and getting me some sort of credit for the unusable portions of the bottle.

Perfect!!

After reading this tread and talking to my vet, I started my ā€œall over body soreā€ 8 yr old Paint gelding on Pentosan - and I have been more than pleased with the results! The combination of getting his feet in good condition with an excellent farrier and the Pentosan - but he’s a changed horse for the better! He no longer pins his ears while grooming, he’s adjusting better than ever, he’s so much more forward in his movement and it’s just obvious that he is overall feeling a heck of a lot better. I am very pleased! I’m not sure which compounding pharmacy she get’s her supply from, but it costs me $145 for the 50ml bottle an does not need to be refrigerated as it was with my first bottle. I loaded him for a month with 6cc’s and I’m just about to give him another shot now as it’s been a month since his last injection. I also started my retired 17 yr old gelding on it and he is doing great too - he’s got navicluar and hock issues and he’s become big man on campus again! I rode him for the first time in a year and he had no lameness issues (he had become pretty gimpy on his front right) that I could detect at just a walk and jog - and he was a lot happier too! I’m sold. It’s cost effective and the results speak for themselves in my book!

Has anyone tried giving it once a week for longer than the loading dose?

Yes, I have. It seemed to help, certainly more than the monthly or bi-weekly schedules I had tried. However, in my case, he continued to decline due to non-joint-related issues and is now on Previcox with monthly Pentosan. So, I am not a good example.

I realize I’m bringing this thread back from the dead but wanted to chime in a little.

I recently bought an OTTB who was being given a shot of Legend every 4-6 months, which my Vet (High Performance Vet with an affinity for Lameness related Sports Medicine) thought was absolutely pointless. We decided to try Pentosan and she recommended one shot every 30 - 60 days as needed. She didn’t feel the loading dose was necessary, and had supporting evidence showing that it didn’t serve much purpose aside from perhaps getting the ā€˜full effects’ a little sooner. She’s had 1 injection so far, and I purchased 3 in total. She advised that I should notice some improvement within a week post injection, and full effects following the second dose. My mare showed mild changes in her hocks but is considered sound (flexed a 0 on 3/4 legs, and a 1 - 2 on the 4th) so we are just doing it for maintenance sake.

I paid, I believe, $60 per 6mL vile, and I am in Canada.

It’s now available in the US from KineticVet, via FarmVet and other companies. Now that the AFL showed enormous improvements in 50 of their professional (human) players—including one who’d had to retire from playing due to massive osteoarthritis—all of a sudden, the US decided it was just fine to use it here after all. Paradigm Pharmaceuticals did a human trial with these players, positive news of which came out in March, and published results in June. Voila! In July, Pentosan is now available here. So glad. Took long enough.

I get it compounded from Wedgewood with a vet script. 30 mL bottle for $97. I give 6mL at a time.

This is very interesting…so maybe not necessary to do the one shot every four weeks??

Per some previous but older posts, I’ve used it after it expired by a few months and it was fine. You’re also better off getting the 50ml bottle from Wedgewood for $119 or $109, can’t remember- but that gives you 8 doses so a better deal than 30ml bottle.
