Yes I am a photographer.
The simple answer as to ‘why’ is to get more action.
The way the horses have been bred has been to preform more. The way they have been condictioned has been to preform more.
The pads and chains cause a “natural” reaction combined with condictioning and the horses own ability to preform the Big Lick gait…

What are the biomechanical consequences, if any, of the reaction(s) of the horse to the Big Lick process?
G.
To my knowaldge there have not been extensive studies done.
And each horse is differnt, has been exposed to differnt treatment, is built differently, is shod differently, is ridden differently, has different genes, and differently abilities.
But as far as I know the “bio mechanical consequences” are amplified stress loads on the horses hindquarters. This is why a low croup, large ample hocks that are set low with a slight angular build for balance is desired. But if the horse is condictioned the properly, and has the right conformation, then There should be no adverse effects, short or long term as long as everything is handled properly and the horse is suited for it.

So, in your opinion, there would be no consequences to the horse beyond those noted to the hindquarters?

By performing the Big Lick, Not that I can think of…
I mean lots of things can happen, but we’re not talking about what can happen but what does when a horse that is suited for it, preforms the big lick.
It’s not like a person putting on shoes without socks and running 5 miles… That action will cause you to have blisters no matter who you are…
OK. Thank you.

People who correct other peoples spelling online?
Are there any worse mongs in the history of humanity? Do they think they’re being clever, or something? Especially when they do it in response to someone they’re debating with, to try and prove a point.
Your post was just petty.
And I … get called…mean…yee gads…

Oh, that’s rich. I’m sure there is a “natural” reaction to chains. But it’s that little thing you call “conditioning” that seems to be the problem. Without the “conditioning” of caustic substances applied to the legs, cattle prods to the faces, and beatings in the head, I’m sure the TWH would not “perform” like they do.
Condictioning such as that thing called riding, exersizing, proper communication with good hands, going up and down hills, using the right bit that the horse has favor of, does the need round work or strait work, or does he/she need a cart, does the horse need a half shoe on Monday and Tueday but then full rubber on Wednesday Thursday and Friday and peeks Friday night for the show. Maybe one leg needs a slight bit more restiatance than the other so that the horse travels evenly…
A TWH does not have to be made sensitive in the pastern for the horse to ‘perform’ the gaits…
The things that you saw on that video was ONE trainer and were discusting. The cattle prod, soring and beating was pure meanness and heartless cruelty.
TWHs preform quite wonderfully completely sound and with abuse free treatment. The soundest padded performance / big lick TWHs that I personally know of do great things and are not in any kind of pain or mistreatment at all.

A padded horse CANNOT be exercised going up and down hills. The only choice of bits for the performance horse seem to be long shank, longer shank, and longest shank known to God. And there is clearly more than one trainer practicing that special “conditioning”.
It’s interesting that you believe the “Big Lick” is a natural gait & the horses are not in pain. Their movement and faces sure don’t show that.
What absolute ignorance of horsemanship on display right here in these training posts - from the how to - to what it produces.
It (this stacked aberration) is the ultimate misuse which hobbles the horse in such a manner that it can not freely use its body. The pure objective it to let lesser riders ride by force and restriction. Which is why the soring worked.
Plain and simple and ugly.

The horse didn’t pull it’s foot off.
They do not bleed with a normal useful shoe when they step it off. So indeed it did. ANd it did it to the point of bleeding. A serious injury in any book.

So these horses don’t need to be “sensitive in the pastern” (can’t bring yourself to use the term SORED)? But they do need stacks and weight to perform the “natural” big lick? If that gait it’s so “natural” why not let them perform without them?

And why can’t it?? I’m sorry but you are highly mistaken, I’ve seen it done with my own eyes many many times.
Some trainers do rather long shanks, and some use quite normal shanked bits.
I didn’t say that no one else was abusive or has been abusive… But it is wrong to assume that even a majority of the show horses are truly abused… That’s giving into sensationalism…
I think the big lick gait can not be achieved with out the horse having a genetic predisposition and the inborn ability to preform it.
And no, when the horses are shod properly, condictioned properly, handled and treated properly, then there is no pain, no abuse, no harm, and the horse still able to “wave it’s legs”, stride deep and shake it’s head vigorously.
And I fully back making bands illegal in any show venue for just this reason. It allows the stacking and heavy shoeing. Nary a foot out there that can support the atrocities tossed on these horses without the bands.
