Roy Exum: Beware The ‘The Big Lick’
Thursday, November 29, 2012 - by Roy Exum

Just when horse industry observers were ready to declare the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association was going to install an executive board heavily dedicated to sound horses on Saturday, ominous word is coming out of Shelbyville that there will be a dedicated effort by the reviled “Big Lick” crowd to upset some of those who have been nominated.

To many who have blanched at the Walking Horse industry since a scurrilous tape surfaced in May of horses being tortured and abused, it comes as little surprise as the “Big Lickers” – fearful that impending legislation against soring and abuse will stop a half-century of “business as usual” in the multi-million-dollar industry – are fighting frantically against such groups as the Humane Society of the United States, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and hundreds of thousands of animal rights advocates from around the world.

At least three known “Big Lick” loyalists have just indicated they will seek nominations from the floor at Saturday’s meeting in Lewisburg. Tracy Boyd, the son of late trainer Billy Boyd who was long known for soring and horse abuse, will try to seek the president’s position while two others with a history of Horse Protection Act violations – Kasey Kesselring and Wayne Dean – will also attempt to be elected in what is expected to be a tense meeting.

Boyd has a colorful history in the Walking Horse industry. He once worked for William B. Johnson, the owner of the now-defunct Waterford Farm in Shelbyville, said to be a legendary horse abuser, and more recently has been employed by “Big Lick” kingpin Frank Eichler, who also has a record of violations according to the USDA database.

Curiously, Boyd has just left Eichler in order to work for Marty Irby, the outgoing president of the TWHBEA who will still retain a vote on the incoming board. Irby, you’ll recall, was famously banned from the National Celebration and its grounds earlier this year by chairman David Howard as infighting among the “Big Lick” faction has escalated with the alarming developments that have shaken the insiders in Shelbyville all summer and fall.

That Kesselring and Dean are hopeful of securing a spot on the board is even more stunning. Kesselring, the headmaster of the private Montverde School in Florida, and Dean, who trains horses for him, both have records of violating the Horse Protection Act and there is the disturbing news that when the USDA releases “over 100” tests that have been found positive for caustic substances taken at the 2012 Celebration, samples taken from a horse entered by Kesselring and Dean will be included.

According to the USDA database, Dean has five prior violations of the federal Horse Protection Act while Kasselring has four, if you include the 2008 ticket given to his daughter Kailin. Kesselring and Dean were cited in 2010 when a horse named Bold Reaction had exactly that when tested for caustic chemicals used in soring.

During the regular nominations process all three “Big Lickers” – Boyd, Kesselring and Dean – received nominations but were each rejected by the nominations committee for undisclosed reasons. It is widely thought their association with the seedy side of the Walking Horse industry, which is now under fire by Congress, caused their names to be rejected but a crafty last-minute push has caused each to declare they will seek a nomination from the floor this weekend.

One source said the TWHBEA group has a rule in its bylaws that prohibits recent offenders of the Horse Protection Act from holding an executive position but many with past HPA violations serve on the “Big Lick” boards and there is hardly any stigma towards repeat violators.

Earlier this year five criminals associated with the “Big Lick” pleaded guilty to federal charges in misdemeanor crimes associated with the Federal Protection Act and now there is pending legislation to amend the Act, which was written 42 years ago, that would give it broader powers against the savage soring and torture that is still commonplace among the small but powerful “Big Lick” violators in the Tennessee Walking Horse show world.

The worst two offenders, Jackie McConnell and Barney Davis, told federal investigators and prosecutors soring was a common practice and preliminary word of USDA testing at the 2012 Celebration reveals the results will be devastating when they are finally made public. Soring horses and other abuse is now a felony in the state of Tennessee but, thus far, there have been no arrests or convictions.

Just recently the 80,000-member American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Society of Equine Practitioners – another 10,000 professionals – urged the new legislation be rushed through Congress. Up until now, the Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ Association has curiously not joined in the cry to eliminate the sadistic methods that – in fact – are ruining the noble breed the group represents. Membership in the TWHBEA has fallen dramatically in recent years.

Other “Big Lick” organizations in Shelbyville have instead fought the Humane Society, the USDA, and any other proponents of reform. One group, called the Tennessee Walking Show Horse Organization, has even sued the Humane Society and the Department of Agriculture in a far-away Texas courtroom in a defiant act believed to have been ordered by the National Celebration’s governing body, which includes Frank Eichler and – get this – Eichler is the chairman of the Show Horse group.

Got to stand up for my choice of breed. Is that allright with you, or should I just ignore the bashing of the Padded horse???

By the way, Walk in the Woods…what is your breed of choice??

As we have said, nothing against the BREED everything to do with what PEOPLE do to the horses.

They sure aren’t born with those stacks strapped to their feet! Or with caustic substances applied to them. However, they are born with an amazing temperament to put up with the crap people do to them.

I do not find that your post are defending the horse, rather the stuff you like to strap to their feet.

Again - how does a horse safely lose one of those padded shoes? Does the band have some mechanism to give before it rips their toe off? A good farrier makes sure to apply keg shoes in a matter which they will pull off with damaging the hoof. How is this done with stacks?

*Disclaimer: I still detest the organization that made this video.

Trainers stae: It is impossible to get the Big Lick without soring. And the only way to stop soring is to get rid of chains and pads.

It is very possible to get the Big Lick without soring. There are many trainers that train that way, but they get blamed along with the trainers that are guilty.

Apparently they don’t show, according to how many test positive.

To The Church Of What’s Happenin Now!;
(In my daddy’s voice from the pulpit)

We are gathered here today ~~~~ to cast out from God’s people~~~~~ the great delusion the enemy has cast ~~~ to deceive His people ~~~ I don’t think you heard me CHURCH! ~~~~ The devil has got to hit the road! ~~~ HE NEEDS TO TAKE HIMSELF OUT OF THHIS BUILDING! ~~~ NEVER TO RETURN! ~~~ DO YOU HEAR ME CHURCH !?! ~~~ CAN I GET A AMEN !!!???!!

At which point sister Womack would be slain in the Spirit and start to JUMP & SHOUT!!!

ITS ON NOW!!! THE WHOLE CHURCH JOINS IN!!! LOL!

Yeah, I feel especially dramatic tonight

My gurlfriend and have just returned from the committee Meetings at TWHBEA leading up to the General International board Meeting tomorrow ~~~

I am gonna write up a brief report of today’s happening from my perspective of not only of things that happened but what I discerned…

But first…Deacon Exum has some announcements to make ~~ then we gonna take up an offering ~~~ ~~~naw ~~~ just kidding LOL!

http://www.chattanoogan.com/2012/11/29/239467/Roy-Exum-Beware-The--The-Big-Lick.aspx

There’s Something In the Air;

This account is my point of view of what I personal saw and heard or was told to me by someone that directly there when something was said
Jennie and I attended the TWHBEA Committee Meetings today in Lewisburg, TN

I always love to go to these meeting because I get to hear other’s points of views, have things I may have thought dispelled, and inform others of things they may not have heard. I always believe this…whenever you are talking to someone you are doing one of two things ~~~ you are being told something you did not know ~~~ so you are learning ~~~ then when you speak you are telling the other person something they may not know ~~~ you are then teaching ~~~

You don’t get to be an ol’ dude like me without having some internal, spiritual awareness of the way things are going ~~ whether you get that fight or flight feeling or the feeling like you are winning…

There’s something In The air!

I’ve been attending these bi-annual meetings for a few years ~~` you ever play sports when you always get beat by the other person, whether in the ring or court or card game ~~~ we all have someone we HAD to beat! Sometimes you lose by the skin of your teeth, and you tell yourself you gonna practice,

Today ~~ I witnessed a “Wave of Empowerment” that I knew was for real because of the way it presented itself…Several people, at different places at different time with ONE VOIOCE that they did not even know others across the building were saying the same thing!!!

What was being said respectfully, clearly, unflinching ~~~

ITS ENOUGH, WE WILL DO DA RIGHT THANG FROM THIS POINT ON !!!
The few, and I must say FEW from what I heard, people concerned that TWHBEA should in some sort of way or fashion, continue to support the belief that everything is okay and that everyone involved on these committees and board members should stay the course with The Padded and Chained Horse and just ignore what people things, feel and believe should just be dismissed as not knowing what the real truth of The Padded Horse Division ~~~

It was raised in The Bylaws Comm. AGAIN that some believe that the board members should pledge to support ALL aspects of TWHBEA, that they are worried that a complete division may be erased and discharged from the ranks of TWHBEA.

That was responded to that you can’t do that citing first amendment rights…this was an attempt to circumvent democracy, free will and majority rule.

I heard people speak up ask questions, respond to comments without wavering in their beliefs that a major over haul is needed, done without attacking, name calling, calm but with resolve ~~~

Tomorrow promises to very interesting…, I’m gonna stop here, reason being, first I’m am exhausted, second, I think what’s gonna happen tomorrow will be waaaay more interesting and final to report…so pleas forgive me but I am wiped…

Maybe I’ll take Watchout with me and let him give you a live on scene report from his laptop…but let me see how he feels about that LOL!

The Preacher

Mornin;

Slept good but woke up real early, feeling fully rested but excited; Talkin to Jen we spoke on something that was revealed in one of the committees of a sinister plot.

Many may have heard that (from who I was told, I maybe wrong) that:
David “You can’t make me do it” Howard, Frank “The rules don’t apply to me ”Eichler and Ms. Sharon “Let’s go, we’ve done it before,” Brandon were starting a new breed registry.

I KNOW!!! Another one! Well, here’s what’s behind that.

Bradley Dick and Denise Rowlands during one their convoluted circle reasoning tirades blurted out “The new law identifies three breeds to be set aside and dealt with,

Tennessee Walking Horses, Spotted Saddle Horses, and Racking Horses…named specifically.

Well, in their “I will find some kinda of way NOT only NOT be compliant, but I continue to keep my pads and chains, Abuse, Soring and Corruption” thinking.

If they name the new organization something new and basically “Reclassify the TWH horses as something new like “National Breed of funny moving Horses” “Gaited Horses, or anything that is not Tennessee Walking Horses ~~~ H.R. 6388 will not apply to them, they think they will be like any of other breeds not named in the initiative therefore they can keep going!

Confirms more and more to me that a change is needed, there are too many people who say “I will be compliant” to be kept being dragged down by people like that…and hear this…

Earlier this year our President Marty Irby who for a young man has done a decent job as President, had an interview in Nashville, TN TV program alongside Keith Dane, in that interview Marty said that the padded horse represented only 2% of the TWHBEA. Now just a couple of weeks ago I heard where he stated that the membership of TWHBEA was 10,000 people.

He’s just reporting numbers that are ~~~ he did nothing wrong by saying this.

What’s 2% of 10,000? 200 !!! TWO HUNDRED MEMBERS comprise TWHBEA Padded Horse Division!!

Do the math

I attended The Performance Comm, The Trainer’s comm., The Pleasure Comm, The Enforcement Comm and The Bylaws Comm…

I heard from allot of people from allot of states and countries on many subjects that has not only to do with TWHBEA, but The Breed itself. Several stated emphatically that they represent their state and people that have sent them here to speak their feeling, thoughts, and desires, and these people DID NOT waiver from serving them well!!!

As Deacon Roy said yesterday, there is gonna be a fight from the floor of a coalition who want to ensure that people who want to da the right thang does not become the majority rule within the International Board Members.

Well, getting ready to leave, wanna get a good seat! Talk Backatcha!

The Preacher

Preacher - You just Keep On Keepin On! Cause is is folks like you that keep the folks here informed on “What It Is!” (anyone remember that Hippie greeting?)

The stacker conversation comes as no surprise.

Oh, and G. - great comments on the Irby letter.

Irby and crew need to go. I and some others I know of would not care one whit if TWHBEA also shut down. I am sure these wonderful horses can be gathered up into another Walking Horse registry - like maybe NWHA. The breed needs to be overseen by a group that would never make excuses for the stacked chained adultery of this breed.

Preacher, I’m looking forward to your next posts.

By the way, I don’t think that renaming the breed to avoid the law will work. If it did, people could just change the name of something illegal, say… marijuana to something else like Sunshine Clover, and get away with using, distributing etc.

Nope. Doesn’t work that way. The horses would still genetically be TWH.

Here is a comment from a Texas farrier.

I’m a Master Farrier and YES these stacks/pads CAN and DO far more often than not cause permanent lifelong damage to the bones/joints/ligaments, bone loss, mechanical laminitis, navicular, abcessing, arthritis. I get so tired of seeing TW horses crippled specifically from this abuse ALL the time. It’s said often in the farrier community that any farrier that applies stacks should be ashamed of themselves and clearly doesn’t truly understand the hoof or care about the horse. Because it is “shunned” by good farriers, trainers/owners learn to do it themselves since farriers who have the HORSES best interest at heart, not the owners wants just for a damn ribbon, will always refuse. The destruction this form of shoeing causes goes beyond the hooves and legs, these “contraptions” that don’t remotely resemble a normal shoe, along w/ soring/chains/pressure pads often also cause irreversable back, neck, hock, shoulder pain from being so contorted structurally and mechanically for so long, EVEN if given small breaks from the shoes here and there. It’s wrong, and their supposed “self policing” all these years is ridiculous. For the horse with no voice, laws need to FINALLY be enforced.

a Master Farrier ya can’t get higher than that.and he touched all the bases.
Stacks and pads DO harm the horse period.i sure hope this gets sent to your sen/rep, please, its going to mine

Anyone can state they are a master farrier. There is no group wuch as AFACJF as it comes up The American Finance Home Page. Try it with Texas and you get Mutual Fund Advice.

I am not for high stacks however I have had horses where we have used pads according to the USEF rules and breed standards “and for a reason”. Theraputic pads, usually in small stacks still allow many a horse to continue with a life rather than slaughter or pasture ornament.

Since you ran the letter can you direct me to the source? Thanks
