The Chronicle of the Betta

Aren’t Foster and Smith GREAT??? I order dog & cockatoo stuff from them, along with aquatic plants when I need them. The plant selection & quality are unparalleled - especially when compared to the dreck one usually sees at the local pet places. Not only do they always arrive quickly & in excellent shape, but 9 times out of 10 they throw in extras. I don’t think I’ve ever bought plants from them where I haven’t received more than I’ve ordered at no extra charge.

I’ve been tempted to try them for some freshwater fish, but am waiting for temps to warm up a bit to hedge survival bets.

That explains why i got an extra. I unwrapped my Anubias, and there were two gorgeous plants. I had only ordered one. They looked exactly like the picture on their website, and were also packed really well. So they are going to get all my plant orders from now on.

And you really can’t beat the quality OR the customer service!

I’m sure we all know how sensitive live aquarium plants can be - frequently even moreso than fish - yet I have Anubias nana & Cryptocoryne wendtii in my tank putting out new leaves & growing strong that I purchased from F&S five years ago. And with no special substrate, C02, or other plant supplements.

I’ve been buying aquarium plants from them for awhile, & only once did I receive a plant that was obviously on its way out - bright yellow leaves, rotted roots - like it had been wrapped up & kept in the dark. Customer Service advised me to plant it anyway just to see if it would come around, but at the same time automatically offered me a credit or refund. (Took the credit since I buy so much from them anyway.) They really are a great company to deal with.

I have 3 Anubias Congensis and 1 Nana. The original one is sprouting babies so I’m hoping I can move some of them into my new tank.

I had to turn up the flow on my filter yesterday after I had put some plants in and stirred up some of the substrate. My Betta was actively seeking out the stronger current and playing in it. He’d get in it and get blown across the tank. He did this over and over until I turned the flow down. There were plenty of spaces in the tank where the water wasn’t moving so he could have stayed out of it. He seemed to be having a great time and would do his little wiggle dance after he finished each “run”. When I finally turned the flow back down, he came to front of the tank and just stared at me. I guess I ruined his fun.

When I got mine, he was so surprised he had all this ROOM to swim in! I could see that he did get tired, but it wasn’t the current–it was actually having the space to do more than just sit there. He built up his endurance and strength in a couple days and was happy to zoom around the tank after that

Yeah mine is all “muscled up” now from all the swimming. He’s also changed color. He was turquoise in the store cup. Now he is a bright royal blue with a black head. Crazy. He’s looking great.

More good news! Snack successfully molted and is now a slightly bigger version of himself. Chips left him alone. Yay!
Maybe my tapping on the glass and yelling, “No! Bad fish!” whenever I caught him eye-balling him worked.
Nah.

Parts of my big tank have been showing up all week. I’m waiting on some chunks of petrified rock I bought off eBay. We’re going to try a modified version of this tank with red sand instead. Kind of an Sedona aquascape without cacti.

I’m gathering things for my 10 G and set up a small tank just in case I find a fish while it’s cycling. If I don’t fall in love with something at Petsmart this week, I’m thinking of ordering a Plakat from Aquabid. Something like this one of these guys.

I thought I’d found “the one”, looked through seller reviews and other fish they’d sold, checked out the transport options, felt totally comfortable with my choice and then realized he was over $100. :no

$100! Was he purple? Those seem to be the rarest and the most $$$$.

All those fish you linked are lovely, but the first one wowed me. I love his big white “ears”.

Here are some new pics from today. I still have a few more plants coming. As you can see, Chips has decided to turn blue. I wish it was just a trick of the light, but it’s not.
These links are to my Facebook album, but it is open to the public.

I had no idea my recently deceased, Petco variety Disco was worth so much!

I like the big eared ones, too. We’ve had so many versions of blue, red and black mixtures and crowntails that I want something different this time. Disco was white and purple and it’s too soon for that again. I wish I could mix that black and yellow one. Or I wish they noted something about their personality so it would be easier to choose.

Chips has almost the same coloring as my Dog. They change colors with good food and care.

Last week there were 2 purple-ish VTs on Aquabid that someone was trying to get $200 for. I think it would be crazy to pay for a color that might be a lighting trick. They looked more blue than purple to me.
I bet I could put Chips under a magenta LED strip and he’d look purple.

I wish they talked about their personality too. Chips doesn’t hide and isn’t very aggressive and I like that. I’d hate to spend a lot of money and get a fearful one.

Incidentally, how many guinea pigs does one need to own to qualify for the Crazy title?

I had a maximum of four of my own (at one time) but I fostered for a while. I came here looking for a source of good quality hay for the rescue and jokingly named myself after someone that was truly a CRAZY Guinea Pig Lady.

There are 2 “half moon Betas” on my craigslist right now. He/she wants $30 for them and all their stuff. They are in a divided 2 gallon tank, which I have no use for. (I took inventory of my storage room last week and I have the 30 G, a 10 G, 2 5 gallons and 3 2.5 gallons. My husband gave at least 2 tanks to someone at work. Maybe I should be the CrazyFishLady)

If they were closer and I could get one for $5-10, I might be willing to check it out.

I think I have read most of these posts, but still not clear to me why they have to be kept alone - although I do see some are compatible with other fish.
Do just the males fight? Or is it a temperature/care consideratioin?

Fascinating topic- all new to me - I like the peacock looking colours.

Well, they are called Siamese Fighting Fish.
They will fight to the death even in a very large tank. I read about someone trying to keep two males in a 500 gallon planted tank, and he had to remove one because he was continually hunting down the other male. The females can sometimes be kept together in groups of 5 or more (most put 10 together), but it depends on the fish. The females aren’t put in with the males except to spawn. On the other hand, they can happily coexist with other fish that won’t attack them - or nibble on their long fins.

Here is TimeBandit’s George. He’s got great color!

Thank you GotGait.

You are very welcome. I think it’s great you saved him from his leaky, little cup at Walmart. He looks like he’s having a blast in his great big tank. I love his colors! I haven’t seen one like him.

I finally went to Petsmart and spent my X-mas gift certificate. Guess what’s sitting on my kitchen counter getting hourly 20% water changes in his cup to acclimate?

He was labeled as a HM but we’ll see. The twit in the fish dept. refused to change his blue water but he looks to be all white with a really neat green band where his body meets the fins. Thin but not in bad shape otherwise. My kids picked the name Snow and then Frosty but I asked them to come up with something green. That went from Spinach to Cilantro and then Cee Lo Green, so he’s a Cee Lo.

Would it be okay to talk about him here or should I start my own thread?

Love his name! You’re welcome to post here. That’s why I renamed my thread title to match our wonderful, all inclusive horse forum.
