He went fast, but maybe that’s for the best. He had a great career and provided us fans with some incredible racing moments. Thanks Coach
That’s odd, my apologies. I thought my source was good
Oh gosh, I also read on what I think is a good source. So sorry. Glad to hear he is still here with his family.
I don’t know that this source is any more accurate.
Regardless, best wishes to him and his family and all his connections.
There were quite a few posts on social media sites from “reliable sources” that have since been deleted/removed.
Sounds like most of them originated from the same single source & then others took it from there & shared. Since then it’s been said that the original source posted false information. Not sure how true any of it is.
My jaw dropped when I saw the news. I knew he was having health issues, but was hoping he’d have at least few good years of retirement where he could continue watching the sport.
Godspeed, Coach.
I don’t think he’d have been content to be on the sidelines. Lukas struck me as someone who wanted to be doing rather than watching.
RIP to D. Wayne Lukas.
True, trying to picture him in the grandstands or outside the paddock feels so wrong
One h*ll of a legacy. Bloodhorse listed all his Breeders Cup wins. There are a lot of them!
It reminded me a little bit of Dr. Steele, the legendary vet who worked on many, many Olympic horses. He was practicing right up until pretty much the last week of his life, and I would bet he preferred it that way.
I think Lukas lived as he wanted to live. Right up until the end. I hope all of us are able to do the same.
He was quoted many a time saying he wanted to take his last breath while sitting on his horse at the track.
He came about as close as one could to fulfilling that wish.
There’s been so many quotes of his over the years.
This one is still one of my favorites.
“If you have a passion, you eliminate all the excuses. That’s how it works. You get up early. You go without a meal. You drive. You go without sleep — as long as you got the passion. Don’t let that sofa pull you down. It’s a little easy when that alarm goes off to say, ‘Oh my God, I don’t know if I really want to do this today.’ Erase that. The most important decision you’ll ever make in your life is your attitude decision. Make it early, and make the right one.”
— D. Wayne Lukas
I remember contemplating bidding on a striking big black and white Paint gelding at a Tattersalls reg horse sale thirty so years ago and wondering why he was getting so many bids. There were plenty of other big broke geldings in the sale who had sold for much less and then I saw who was bidding. He loved those loud stock horses as pony horses.
