A tiny bit more settled but still hisses when I add food or water (using long sleeves and a glove).
The cat is our neighbor’s barn cat. He’s feral but fed and cared for. Just wandered when it was cold or run off by another of her barn cats. He was really angry when one of our dogs slipped into the garage. Just seeing the dog pissed him off and scared the dog half to death. It was dangerous to reach in the cage after that so I’m glad the neighbor piped up. I should’ve asked first, but he was cold and I assumed. He does appear to be in good condition so I suppose I should’ve asked sooner. She was happy that he wasn’t coyote bait. We’ll see if he comes back.
He’ll be back!
Maybe do a sneak neuter a la @threewishes. ( Neutering a cat that isn’t technically yours)
But glad he’s got a home.
Hahaha! No. We don’t have money for that. Vet prices are high enough for our own pets.
That was epic, btw.
Late coming back to this party, but Yes, I’ve read the Slow Blink is Cat for I trust you, might even like you
FWIW:
I had a semi-resident feral black kitty I was sure was female because - like you said - no stink, no spray. I named her Black Betty
Then “she” got injured (DX: saddle block ) & Emergency vet told me Betty was an intact male.

Sh*t neighbor
Ask around, some shelters will do (or have access to) cheap or even free neuter/spay services.
OR…
If he shows up again, get him neutered (pending access to above Cheap Fix ).
Neighbor never noticed when he was a guest at your place & you could return him once the betadine wears off
He is little so age could be a factor in low stink. He hasn’t come back. I may have offended him. Or, his search for a better offer didn’t work out to his liking. He got trapped! lol.

My very-good cat friend told me that cats blinking at you are saying that they ‘love you.’ I eventually got a beautiful torti-point Siamese who would blink at me VERY deliberately. I named her “Sapphire Kisses” or “Kisses” for short.
I got a cat on Valentine’s day like this! My husband had forgotten to get me anything and while I was doing chores something meowed at me that wasn’t my regular barn cat. Wild as all get out but moved right in. Got her spayed and figured she’d vanish but now she sleeps in the tack room. Great hunter, and actually ended up average friendly. We assume someone dumped her.
It certainly was.
