I grew up in NC, could it be that we are all just from/in Carhartt country? LOL

South Carolina. Probably close enough.
Nah. Lots of Carhartt around here. I have a butt-covering ‘parka’ style one that OP would probably like, it has sleeve cuffs and a double zipper. No idea on the model name as I bought it lightly used several years ago for steal ($40!). I like to layer my my Columbia omni-heat vest underneath, keeps the body warm without binding up the arms.
Carhartts wear like iron!
I remember borrowing a one-piece snowmobile suit for riding on the trails in the bitter cold, I was toasty! But they are too heavy and stiff for regular wear.
For barn chores ( I wouldn’t ride in them) I have fleece-lined “hose material” Duluth pants. Warm, windproof, comnfy and light, nothing sticks to them, big pocket on leg for phone. I tuck them inside my Bogs ( and I layer my socks, too!) and I can spend 1/2 day outside in the bitter cold, no problem.
Maine actually. Moved to NC to beat the winters… or “wintahs” in my native tongue.
Hehehe you probably get a good laugh out of us native NCer’s every winter!
Nothing to add, other than every time I read these threads I am happy to be retired from barn work!
I actually like these quick winter storms. It’s nice to hunker in and work from home. In Maine, we would still have to commute to work!
I have Carhardtt bibs that I wear with a sweatshirt or 3/4 zip and am warm as toast most days. Unzip, put on a jacket (maybe) and boots, and you are clean and ready to ride.
I finally bit the bullet last winter and bought Ariat Bromonts and they have changed everything. Those plus a box of insole foot warmers bought on Amazon seriously make all the difference.
Call it persistent marketing, I got another Dover email today. It is for the Veterans Day promo, spend $200, get a $100 gift card. So I looked at the original MH parka. Got it at .$189.99, added in a couple of Rambo elastic tail cords (which I use on lots of horse clothes), made the minimum (even with another promo code), got free shipping, and voila!
Should have the MH parka to try by next week. And the gift card might go towards winter boots!
PS— Promo code for 10% off is CM18USEF , seems to be continuously valid.
The cold is not just coming, it got here last night.
We were 5F this morning, unexpected, were supposed to only get to 27F.
I ordered something from LL Bean and am now getting their spam emails about all kinds of discounts, several a day!
I will say that the mid height Muckboots are nice and toasty, even trampling over snowdrifts.
We have also had a few hits of cold and snow. Sunday into Monday was snow, last night was pretty cold. But we’ll be back in the 50’s later in the week. Typical for weather here.
I bought myself the knockoff Dubarrys last week and my toes were still cold with wool socks after being outdoors for several hours. I am back to thinking waterproof winter paddock boots and a pair of full chaps is the way to go. Add on a bunch of layers on top and only your butt will be cold, haha.
If you are looking for a winter breech, I second the Stickyseat breeches. Hands down the only winter breech I can tolerate. They dont sag, or have a weird shape, they block the wind and chill, keep you warm without over heating, repel dirt and hay/shavings, and have just the right amount of “stick” on the back of the thighs for grip in the saddle. I own 2 pairs, and will be getting a 3rd for this season. I havent needed to layer with undergarments yet, but if I had to I would say silk thermal leggings would be your best option if you really needed the extra.
I still have my Dubarry’s from 2011 and they’re still waterproof and VERY warm when I add the fleece boot liners to them. Also, winter breeches=Kerrits Sit Tight N’ Warm. I love mine.
Under Armour cold gear for base layers, fleece top layer and an Eddie Bauer down coat have worked for me through Canadian winters. I wear my Dubarry’s at the barn and to ride, with a Smartwool or alpaca sock. (Love the Smartwool socks with the padded soles for extra comfort.) Love the height of the Dubarry Galways for the snow and they are perfectly waterproof. With a good warm sock, they work great. And definitely agree about the Kerrits Sit Tight n Warm breeches!
I don’t have experience with Mountain Horse winter gear, but I love, love my MH Sovereign tall riding boots in the summer.
