The Comeback Kid! (Edited 1/17/22)

Oh man Tex, I’m so so sorry to read this :sob: The tough ones seem to wiggle in REALLY deep if they manage to stay with us. And the more they hurt themselves, the more time we spend deeply involved with them, and that just makes them part of our soul. Godspeed Abby, you had a mission here on Earth and clearly spent a LOT of time making sure everyone who needed you, make sure of it.

Oh no Tex, I’m so sorry. I always enjoyed reading about Abby, although I commiserated with you over the years on how often she seemed to delight in keeping you on your toes. I’m with SharonA1 - horsey heaven just got a lot more interesting and the caretakers up there are in for a wild ride. You were the very best thing for her - she was so lucky to have found someone like you. Having had an older horse go suddenly ataxic, I am with you - you did the right thing even when it sucked to do. Wishing you some solace and peace in the days going forward. Whoever fills Abby’s stall has some giant shoes to fill – but not in the vet bill department, I hope.

Godspeed, Abby (& no TakieBacksies from the Bridge!)

A friend had an Abby of her own - chestnut mare, of course.
Vet told her this mare had to have contributed heavily to researching the Merck Veterinary Manual.

I don’t know how I missed all the threads about Abby’s medical “adventures,” but reading about her passing makes me want to look them up and learn more about your wonderful, if difficult, girl.

I’m so sorry for your loss. She was so lucky to have you to care for and love her all those years. Thanks for sharing her with us.:kissing_heart:

Thanks @Fiesta01 and thanks everyone. It means a lot to me.

Fiesta, there really aren’t all that many threads about her. This one, another long one from Christmas Eve 2013 when she cracked her hoof open like an egg, a few breeding-related ones. Mostly it’s 9 years of me hijacking other people’s threads with her anecdotes.

The funniest thread, in retrospect, is the one from the fall of 2013 when I asked if I should buy an aged broodmare… to which COTH responded with a resounding NO!!! Y’all weren’t wrong. :joy:

Also, I always feel the need to defend her after these stories. She really was a good broodmare. Her foals were not like her; they were normal and successful… I mean people don’t pay to ship broodmares across the ocean (twice) who aren’t producing good foals. I was always prepared that I may get a whacko carbon copy of her that I would need to hold together with duct tape and bubble wrap for the rest of its life.

I think I’ll start with that one.

I’m sorry for your loss of Abby. I had followed this thread loosely and was happy for you when all turned out well.

Sometimes the weird ones are the best ones (not for the wallet!) but they just steal your heart.
Hope you can find some peace and comfort that you gave her a wonderful life

Just saw this latest update and wanted to express my condolences but also congratulate you on your ability to get her through so many health challenges throughout her life but knowing when enough is enough. You both did good. Godspeed.
