This is where I struggle and I’m SO glad you said this. Sure I can go out and alternate fly sprays multiple times a day but the bugs are horrid this year! I swear the sensitive horses are sweating MORE trying to keep bugs away. I just won’t keep my TB in a stall during the day I could but mentally he is so much more content out. I prefer sanity over a jet black coat
Booties and masks are on always when out… I think having a sheet on part of the day is a great idea.
Yep! My boys are only in part of the day because they’re happy to be (I’m convinced sometimes my gelding would live in his stall full time if I let him – he’s one you would never want to give in/out privileges to because he’s just stay in) and love snoozing in front of their fans. But, if they had to be out during the day, they’d be out with their sheets. They’re just happier with them on.
Mine, too.
I have a plastic-like, Kensington type (I think it’s a Baker brand) fly sheet that I use on my guy. No fabric so when he sweats it doesn’t get clingy. Does he sweat in it? Yes but I don’t think he looks more of a sweaty mess than the other horses with nothing on and seems happier. I think the days where it’s not scorching hot he doesn’t look as sweaty as the others.
The fly sheet is pretty durable, it does double duty as a protective sheet in winter and the fit sheet duty in the summer. I don’t even know how old it is now… maybe 8 yrs old?
