The Horse with the Flying Tail

So I was sick over the weekend and looked up some older horse movies to stream and came across a Disney movie, “The Horse with the Flying Tail” A great short film about the horse Nautical’s life, with some great older footage that included a cameo from George Morris, Bill Steinkraus , Hugh Wiley, and Bert de Nemethy.

I wondered where Hugh Wiley is today… ?

Don’t know about where Wiley is today, but you do know that other than the actual footage after Wiley got the horse, the rest of that movie is pure Disney fiction? He was bred to be a jumper, by a Palomino QH stallion (Muchacho de Oro) out of an Army Remount mare (i.e., probably mostly TB). Real name bef. Wiley was Peter de Oro. He WAS difficult, but he was never a cow horse, nor a rent horse, nor abused.

IIRC Mr Wiley passed on not too long ago.

And it’s a made for early TV movie, not a documentary. About the first real exposure the sport had on prime time TV via the Disney TV show whatever it was called at the time (Walt Disney Show, Wonderful World of Disney, Wonderful World of Color…whatever)Think it was Sunday night back when we had 3 networks and maybe 2 to 5 locals in bigger cities. That was it.

There was one with Eventing too, The Horsemasters with Annette Funicello. Looking back they seem trite and contrived. In the context of the times, late 50s/early 60s, they were pretty neat to watch and learn from. And all we had to watch and learn from.

I bought the movie on E-Bay after seeing an earlier thread, and was not disappointed–lots of fun to see so many greats of the past jumping with such amazing dash and style!

One thing I was struck by was how young Bert deNemethy was then; was he a U.S. citizen eventually? Given his extraordinary experience and expertise, I wondered why he was always coaching and never RIDING? Can anyone shed some light on that? Not familiar with the AHSA/FEI rules of that time period with regard to foreign nationals.

LOVE the movie and I am still eagerly awaiting the release of the “Horsemasters”!

I grew up on those Sunday night Disney shows and was so happy when there was a horse one! “Horse of the West” about QH, “Littlest Outlaws” about a jumper in Mexico, “Run Appaloosa Run” “Miracle of the White Stallions” “Horsemasters” are the ones that come to mind.

Our age is showing. Remember Spin and Marty? And Tonka ( that was a theatrical release though)?

One I cannot find on DVD, and I believe it was a TV movie, is “Stormy,” about a TB born too late in the year to race who “struggles to find his place” and ends up as a polo pony.

I remember that that one, not well though. Back then nobody was much into preservation , who knew about On Demand…

Anyone else remember the Tattooed police horse? Probably a Disney from the same time.

BTW, this coming Monday, TCM is having a horsey sort of day.
Early on some terrible movie about wild stallion, Then on to Tbs, Seabiscuit, National Velvet, and International Velvet, with one of my favorite lines from ‘the captain’, Not too bad, for a cowboy".
They finish up at 5 central with The Black Stallion.

We need to cobble these old movies/TV shows? DVDs together for Movie Night at the Old Horsepersons Nursing Home so penny candy can be thrown at the screen whenever there are errors/mistakes/triteness to be pointed out–the same Old Horsepersons Nursing Home set among green pastures filled with horses, where:

  • visitors are asked to bring carrot bouquets instead of flowers,
  • the residents’ rooms look like box stalls
  • residents can self-treat their complaints with on-hand veterinary products
  • no dressing gowns, only the latest in comfy breeches
*Old Horsepeople have riding physical therapy or that equine machine you can ride or at the very least a helmet cam vicarious ride,
  • activities like pearl restringing after clutching them too tightly upon seeing young riders using crest releases instead of automatic releases,
*tall boot bedazzling blinging sessions (and afterwards arguments about whether they should be worn at shows)
  • Rules rewriting sessions (and more arguments)
*grandstands on the front porch where Old Horsepersons can sit and brandish their crops at young whippersnappers who dare to get on the lawn
*Jack Russells and Corgis and rescues for Therapy Dogs

(disclaimer: Not making fun of anyone but myself here–Just having a little fun thinking of the Perfect Horsey Retirement Home–that is, if I have to go to one and don’t get myself smashed into oblivion in the meantime, like today when I was bending over to pick out a hind hoof and suddenly the horse in the next crosstie freaked out)
It would be fun to watch all those old TV shows/movies and discuss the old horse books with other Horsepeople of A Certain Age.

Happyhooves, you are a genius. And I do remember the tattooed Police Horse, busted from the track because he couldn’t hold his trot (Standardbred), coming heroically to the rescue of a runaway years later…at a racing trot! Love happy endings.

I think Tonka did get shown on “Wonderful World of Disney.” It was filmed just up the road a piece from us, so I had some interest in it. I wouldn’t mind seeing it again to look at the scenery. Some of the Disney movies went both theatrical and TV.

I remember reading somewhere about the Disney film crew following Nautical one season, anxious to shoot a big win for the movie, and yes, it was largely fiction, but I loved it anyway.

I WANNA RESERVE A SPOT!!! Who do I send my deposit to???

I seem to remember watching a movie back in elementary school, when we were all herded into the cafetorium to watch ancient Disney movies still on film reels, about a standardbred. I want to say it was Dan Patch, but the only search for “Dan Patch movie” I get yields an old black-and-white movie; I know this one was in color. Anyone recall the one I’m thinking of?

There is a - Disney, I think - movie that I recall (I’m oooooold), perhaps “So Dear to my Heart”? or maybe Song of the South? that had a harness horse part to it - supposed to be Dan Patch, I believe. I do know the (rather bad) B&W movie you mean. Picked up a DVD for $1 at the Dollar Store. LOL

The Tattooed Police Horse was a standardbred movie, of sorts.

I wonder if you might be thinking of a non-Disney flick, “Home in Indiana,” which used to be on constantly when I was a kid. Boy comes to live with loving aunt and crusty drunkard uncle who has a harness barn. I forget the details, but the kid gets a race mare named Maudeen or Maudine IV and races her successfully, only to discover she’s going blind, with another heat or two to go in the big race. She was entered in multi-heat races, and her arch rival was driven by…Flea Flip Dryer. Or a name that sounded like that.

I remember watching Disney movies in the cafeteria as a grade schooler as well - “The Magnificent Hemo” about blood, and “A Fire Called Jeremiah.” Never a horse movie!

Oh, good grief, was Hemo the Magnificent a Disney film? I saw that in school … had no idea it was Disney! Cool!

I remember watching The Horse With the Flying Tail on Disney on TV, also The Horsemasters, and Tonka, and a western with a mare called The Bay Lady (don’t remember the name of the movie). I also remember a Pat Boone movie (not Disney) that featured a harness racing horse named (I think) Tugfire. Anybody remember that? I think it also featured the song “April Love.”

I think The Bay Lady may have been a semi-documentary about a noted barrel racer? My mind blanks on her name right now, but she was still barrel racing a few years back on a BIG QH named “Orange Crush.” The NFR announcers kept saying he looked like a WB and should be a jumper, not a barrel racer.

I think the Pat B
oone movie may have the same name as the song “April Love”.

What we old folks have over you young whipper snappers is we saw all these movies on their first release and we still remember them! April Love was the PB movie and I also remember the Home in Indiana one. There was a movie that was kind of sad with I think Brandon de Wilde was the kid in it. Just a vague memory on that.
