The Horse with the Flying Tail
We need to cobble these old movies/TV shows? DVDs together for Movie Night at the Old Horsepersons Nursing Home so penny candy can be thrown at the screen whenever there are errors/mistakes/triteness to be pointed out–the same Old Horsepersons Nursing Home set among green pastures filled with horses, where:

  • visitors are asked to bring carrot bouquets instead of flowers,
  • the residents’ rooms look like box stalls
  • residents can self-treat their complaints with on-hand veterinary products
  • no dressing gowns, only the latest in comfy breeches
*Old Horsepeople have riding physical therapy or that equine machine you can ride or at the very least a helmet cam vicarious ride,
  • activities like pearl restringing after clutching them too tightly upon seeing young riders using crest releases instead of automatic releases,
*tall boot bedazzling blinging sessions (and afterwards arguments about whether they should be worn at shows)
  • Rules rewriting sessions (and more arguments)
*grandstands on the front porch where Old Horsepersons can sit and brandish their crops at young whippersnappers who dare to get on the lawn
*Jack Russells and Corgis and rescues for Therapy Dogs

(disclaimer: Not making fun of anyone but myself here–Just having a little fun thinking of the Perfect Horsey Retirement Home–that is, if I have to go to one and don’t get myself smashed into oblivion in the meantime, like today when I was bending over to pick out a hind hoof and suddenly the horse in the next crosstie freaked out)
It would be fun to watch all those old TV shows/movies and discuss the old horse books with other Horsepeople of A Certain Age.
Happyhooves, where is this place located??? I want to head over right now and move in! I’ll call a realtor and put my farm on the market immediately!

There was some background on Nautical, the “Horse with the flying tail” in the US Equestrian Team Book of Riding from Wiley’s viewpoint.
There are some other interesting stories about those times as well.

Save me a spot, too. I do request to wear the race track garb - baggy jeans or sweat pants and paddock boots

I remember most of those movies watching them on the Wonderful World of Disney/Color, whatever. My question though is about a book:

The story of a winning harness racer that is injured and eventually ends of on lower end tracks. His nasty owner enters him into some big time race and all the other horses are wondering what he’s doing there (the horse tell the story), the horse comes in 5th and his owner, who staked all he had to enter him, starts beating the snot of out of him for not winning. Enter a young girl who stops him and he gives her the horse. She takes him home to her farm where they have a couple of fun plow horses and a bunch of other animals and she retrains him to be a jumper.

Anyone know what book that is? I loved it and would like to own a copy if I come across it somewhere.

I always liked the Horse in the Grey Flannel Suit. The horse trailer had a bar. =)

Not a very good movie, of course, but for horse crazy kids in the 60s it was great!

I remember a Disney flic about a Standardbred that was injured on the race track -went to auction and an Amish family picked it up.i think there was a girl involved who helped the horse heal… that’s all i disremember…sign me up for that nursing home -now is good.

That nursing home sounds pretty good to me, too!

Anyone remember an actor named Jon (or was it Ron? Or Lon?) McAllister? I recall he played in a lot of those old horse and mule movies. The only one I can remember now is “Scudda Hoo Scudda Hay”. I think that one was about mules.

How about “My Friend Flicka”? DD and I were watching Beezie at WEG yesterday and she has a Flicka breyer - she said Cortes C looks just like her Flicka Breyer LOL

Brandon de Wilde was the little boy in Shane.

Yes, Brandon was in Shane but he was also in a horse movie which for the life of me I can’t remember. Need to head over to Imbd!

Ah the Wonderful World of Disney…we didn’t have a colour TV, so I’m not sure what was colour or black and white! I do remember Run Appaloosa Run, the Horse in the Grey Flannel Suit, and one about a Paso Fino who liked oranges…can’t remember the name. It was the times of Westerns on TV. I do remember seeing a movie called (I think) The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, and cried and cried when the horse was killed. I think the actor was Kirk Douglas?

Googled the movie name and it sure isn’t the Heart is a Lonely Hunter.
Googled some more…Lonely are the Brave.

Oh, good grief, was Hemo the Magnificent a Disney film? I saw that in school … had no idea it was Disney! Cool!
No, Hemo the Magnificent was produced by Bell Laboratories and was part of a series of science movies for children. I first saw it back in the dark ages (late 1950s)–loved it. Last Christmas I bought it and the others (now on DVD) for my husband–fun trip down memory lane.

I did check IMBD for Brandon de Wilde in a horse movie and he wasn’t so it must have been some other kid.

The Paso was Christobolito the Calypso Colt

The Standardbred who went Amish went on to race in the Maryland Hunt Cup

Not that I was an avid watcher of Disney horse movies or anything

Lonely are the Brave is a very underrated movie - one of Douglas’ best roles. It is B&W, not colour.

I believe that “Sue” in “The Horse with the Flying Tail” was Suzanne Jones. A legend in the AQHA world. She use to write a column in Horseman magazine ( I think). She didn’t play herself in the movie.

Disney had some wonderful horse movies. I love “Tonka”. There is also a movie about a boy in Mexico who steals a jumping horse.

Littlest Outlaws was the one about the little boy stealing the jumper. I watched International Velvet yesterday on TMC and oh my gosh, was it silly ! I am surprised that actors of the quality of Christopher Plummer and Anthony Hopkins would lower themselves!

Meh. All the remakes have to f**k around with the original. Even the earlier and much better version of Flicka (a CHESTNUT) departed quite a bit from its source (e.g., Ken’s brother was totally left out, a little girl (who?) appeared, etc.), but the latest iteration was particularly dumb.
