The Price You Pay....

My costs are way different then yours! Im in lower Michigan at a full service boarding barn

Board including daily stall cleaning, blanketing, large 16-24 hour turn out, grain, hay, arena use: $400
Trim: $50 (4-6wks)
Full set of shoes: $150 (6wks)
Supplements: $200 (monthly)
Legend injections : $150 (monthly)
lessons and showing: ~$700-1000 (yearly)
Chiropractor: $200 (3-6 months)
saddle fitter: $150 (2x per year)

i total out at about roughly $1500 per horse monthly when everything else is considered (other vet bills, tack, etc)

My provincial health plan pays for my therapist… so I can spend thousands of dollars a year on my pleasure pony who I ride twice a week and never show. A barnmate, who is retired, cited that CPP (Canadian Pension Plan) pays her board and OAS (Old Age Security) covers her lessons.

I’m in NoVA and pay for my now kids pony.

Outdoor board + additional hay/dry lot fee - 425.00 per month - $5100.00
Farrier 50.00 every 5/6 weeks barefoot x 10 times a year - $500.00
Vet - Approx. 1k a year
Supplements - Vitamin E, Allergy meds, and MSM - 45-50.00 a month - 600.00 per year

So grand total is $7,200.00

I don’t count my daughters lessons as she works them off at the barn. I pay all the horse expenses from my salary and am looking at moving to a new position to allow me to purchase another horse guilt free.
