Why would they leave? If it were my friend, she would just think your husband was a cuckold.

A friend of mine who is Chinese (born in Beijing, currently living in Nanjing) and I were working on making costumes for our children’s school play (in Nanjing). We were making little elf costumes with little green hats. She was VERY clear that while it was (borderline) okay for the children to wear little green hats, never would a Chinese person wear a green hat. She told me it meant that they were cuckolded. One person, of course, does not a cultural tradition, and she was from Beijing, so it could certainly be a regional thing, or maybe even just her personal family superstition, but my response to the OP was, oh, so a roof too?[/QUOTE]
RR - I’m aware of the hat thing, which is reasonably wide spread, at least from my limited experience when talking about headgear (curious about the origins of that - I’m TAing for a course in Chinese material culture for the summer, I’ll ask the professor on Tuesday). We are not, however, talking about hats. I was also referring to the use of green sedan chairs (red is more ‘traditional’ for brides). Though, if we’re speaking of ‘structures’ and things that go over one’s head, a sedan chair is probably closer to a pavilion than a hat.
Regardless, I’ve seen plenty of green roofed structures - not particularly uncommon for pavilion-like structures. Maybe someone simply didn’t like the way it looked from a distance?
I was just watching the end of bike racing and after the finish, the camera panned up and around. Very distinctly green roofs on a palace or temple of some sort.
Either the original post was incorrect in some way or the green roof tradition is regional to Hong Kong. That makes sense since the Equestrian sports were originally going to be in Beijing and got moved. The roofs may have been painted already, or colors picked out. After the move to Hong Kong, someone found out about a local tradition.
Yeah, that.
Equibrit, using big words doesn’t make you impressive, sorry.
Take off the rose glasses.
All I need to do is remember the image of students standing in front of tanks. Or Tibetan monks in prison.
I know plenty of CHINESE people. (yes, actual ex-pats) My problem is NOT WITH CHINESE PEOPLE. My problem is with THIER REPRESSIVE GOVERNMENT. Just the same as I have a problem with the Taliban taking the Islamic religious restrictions on women to the extreme of making them wear garments that were practically grain sacks! (among so many other things) I have a problem with ANY repressive governmental power.
I’ll welcome them into the world community just as soon as they make true, tangible efforts towards cleaning up thier human rights problems and thier negative impact on the environment. Or did I just imagine that smog on the TV? It looked like a California wild fire should have been in the background.
That’s right, Albion, they are all pinko commies. Watching alot of “All in the Family” reruns lately?? Sheesh.
I wasn’t aware that I had.
