The State of the TB Breeding Industry

I’m dreaming of the stallions I could use if I had the opportunity for an extra $30k. I could breed a really, really serious racehorse with that amount of money.

I’d like to point out that there are quite a few serious racehorse sires who are standing for not a lot of money now because their commercial appeal has waned. The sales are driving the high prices, and since you’re breeding to race, there are bargains to be had. My #1 pick is Cross Traffic, Champion Freshman Sire of his year, sire of multiple graded stakes winners including G1 champion Jaywalk.

Oh, we’ve already signed a fantastic contract to Jimmy Creed. Cross Traffic was on our short list too, but it was DH’s year to pick the stallion.

Our other mare isn’t an IN resident, so we must return to an Indiana stallion. That choice is still up in the air.

And that is exactly what dooms it. Land prices skyrocketing and population density pushing more redevelopment of long settled residential areas.

Heard the track management contract is up in about 5 (?) years and that will be it.

There’s too much development near the track. It’s an extremely hot environment during the summers and an area that gets hurricanes. I’m not sure there are that many gambling/ racing fans in that location. Given the location they may very well end up selling and could they turn it into a sports arena or a larger gambling casino? It seems like the lifespan of that particular track, in that location, is limited. There may be more profit in selling out, given land prices and development in that area?

Florida looks like they are going to pass this:

If they completely stop horse racing in Florida, what will this do to the industry? I suppose you could still breed and train horses here, but go out of state…
