The Triple Crown Races 2019

I was really disgusted by the decision yesterday, but am backpedaling after some videos.
Athough I also see in some videos Country House bearing in around the turn, which left less than a gap for 3 horses to enter just as they were gaining ground.
Yes, Maximum Security made the most egregious move, but I would have liked to have heard some consideration for Country House’s move as well.

And am sure all would rather a win be earned without the controversty.

But rather than feeling it was ruining things, as I did last night, today is another day, and am hoping the two (actually, the three! Including Omaha Beach!) will meet later this year. That will be some show.

Thank you so much for sharing this. It’s perfect. Also think so much of Mark Casse.
So worth listening to. :encouragement:

Here’s what Jon Court had to gain. When the horse’s owners said to him after the race, “How bad a jockey are you if all you can do is ride my horse to a 17th place finish?” he could answer, “I was riding your horse to a 3rd place finish when I got mugged by the winner. And look, the stewards agree with me because he got taken down.”

A key point that I feel like many upset fans are missing is that the goal of the DQ was not to make Country House the winner. No one reviewed the tape and said, “Oh, Country House should have won.”

Maximum Security committed a foul that earned him a DQ per the KY rule book. The others moved up one place by default.

Also, the location of the incident was a factor. Bumping happens, but early in the race, horses get a chance to regroup and recover. Having to HARD check horses making their final bid for the wire definitely influences the outcome. No, we can’t say what the outcome would have been, but several horses legitimately lost their chance at a placing as a result of Maximum Security’s illegal move, which is why the rules placed him below all involved.

Is this common? Not first run in for jockey Saez.

That article is from November 2016.

But no, it is not uncommon for jockeys who ride poorly or dangerously to be given days.

Fairly. There’s a fine line between good race riding and making a dangerous move. Not to mention you’re responsible for piloting a 1000lb prey animal with a mind of its own. When you ride 10 races a day, you’re bound to mess up and get called for careless riding at some point.

A few names of jocks who have been slapped with a dangerous riding suspension include Mike Smith and Frankie Dettori… not bad company.

Now that my emotions have calmed down from last night I have to say that I can see the grounds for the DQ. I’m still disappointed with the race and the way it ended but all came home safe without incident and that’s the most important thing. There will be other Derby’s.

Maximum Security isn’t going to the Preakness the owners said on Twitter and looks like Country House may not either…it’s up in the air right now.
What a absolutely insane TC season this year…

How do you, as trainers, know if it is a pattern with a jockey? How does it affect your jockey choice?

How common is the drifting interference overall?

I ask because I was reading jeremy balans feed. And this jockey has been accused of this before. There was a Florida instance as well.

This was this year. Last graf.

Probably half the jockeys in the field have had a minor suspension for careless riding or interference at some point in their careers.

The ones who commit egregious offenses get major suspensions or banned.

If Luis Saez was “known” for dangerous riding, he wouldn’t be getting mounts for some of the most prestigious trainers and races in the US.

There is no reason for a witch hunt.

Thank you. Just looking to educate myself.

Jockeys at this level ride over a thousand races per year. Sh*t occasionally happens, even to the most careful and respectable of them.

I could see where this could happen with young horses to an extent.

But I would like to hear from some trainers as to if a jockey has had this charge repeatedly levelled and suspended for, does it affect your jockey choice.

This isn’t cheap to do. I am just wondering.

And what I’m trying to say is that it would only factor into a trainer’s decision IF they thought it was a problem.

The fact that that the most venerable trainers in the business (and I don’t just mean winningest, I mean venerable) ride Luis Saez regularly indicate that they don’t find anything of concern in his record… or else they wouldn’t be riding him. These people work alongside him seven days a week.

Trainers, especially top trainers who have choices, avoid jockeys all the time for a myriad of reasons, including rashes of suspensions. That just isn’t the case here.

Thank you for answering my probably idiotic questions.

Not idiotic at all. I’m so insistent with my response because I feel like a lot of people (not necessarily you) are looking for someone to blame.

Understood. Is it common that derby entrants go from claimers to derby contenders as max sec did.

No. Absolutely not common. Does it happen every now and again? Sure (Tax had also previously run for a tag in this race). But it’s definitely not the norm.

Was it a factor? Probably not.

What may have been factor was just the horse’s overall greenness, as I noted in earlier posts. He only had four prior starts at the same racetrack prior to the Kentucky Derby. Horses with only three, four, or five starts prior to the Kentucky Derby are becoming increasingly common. But you can’t necessarily “prove” that was a factor in this incident.

Tax, another of this year’s Derby horses, was claimed out of his first start for 50k.

Charismatic famously ran for a tag (in his case 62.5k) before going on to win the Derby.

A horse’s true potential isn’t always obvious before he runs, or even in his first few starts.

I think seabiscuit and charismatic had their run as claimers, or am I,mixing up? Max sec ascent seemed pretty rapid.
