The Triple Crown Races 2019

LaurieB, thanks. I read that article but obviously didn’t read for detailed comprehension (mine  ) further on down regarding surgery and future plans. If late June, at the earliest, then TC races are out but could possible make some of the mid-summer classics (assuming he doesn’t pull a “Justify” and just retire from racing which I hope doesn’t happen).

I Googled a few different combinations of keywords and couldn’t really find detailed info on what it would cost to enter the TC races. I did find the early nomination of $500 and the $25k/$25k to enter and start the KD. Somewhere I found a mention of $200K for a horse not nominated but couldn’t confirm that for 2019.

I know early nominations are pretty inexpensive. My never saw a racetrack TB was BC nominated but when done as a foal, it was really, really inexpensive. Better to nominate early and inexpensive if possible (at least IMO).

Have to admit as I am sitting here typing and listening to TVG talk about Saturday’s weather forecast and it sounds like possible/probably rain which would have been, IMO, right up Omaha Beach’s alley  ouch

Do you think he could run on Saturday? Does an entrapped epiglottis affect the breathing and performance?

No, Omaha Beach was officially scratched yesterday. He will not be in the starting gate on Saturday.

Ref the link to the article LaurieB posted for me.

Surgery next week with possible return late June/early July.

Yes, entrapped epiglottis would definitely affect his breathing and performance.

I know he was scratched but Laurierace said it didn’t make sense to her. So I wondered if she (and others) thought he shouldn’t have been scratched.

I have heard of other horses having an entrapped epiglottis but I don’t know how much it affects them.

The condition isn’t the same in every horse (and there are grades of severity). Omaha Beach’s problem is explained here: https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/233421/favored-omaha-beach-out-of-kentucky-derby

The BC nom is $400 if it’s done by 10/15 of the year the horse is born. Then it’s $1,500 until (I think) the end of the yearling year. After that, it jumps up hugely and is around $200,000 to run a horse in a BC race if you aren’t already nominated. Most foals that are going to a sale are nominated because it look good on the page–whether their breeders think they have a hope of ever running in a BC race or not. Mostly, it’s just marketing.

I had the same thoughts about Omaha Beach and Saturday’s weather. I really feel bad for Rick Porter. When it comes to the Derby, he just cannot catch a break.

My mare was a 1998 model so it may have been even less than $400. She never, to the best of my knowledge, even saw a track (no lip tattoo and running fast was too much like hard work  ). But, for me, a Secretariat granddaughter and BC nominated… what’s not too like :D. Such a nice temperament for a TB… a bit of a “worrier” which was something we both struggled with but also so very tolerant of my inability to ride. She’s been gone a few years but I still miss her.

I hope Omaha Beach does come back and race later this summer, eventually, in the Classic. Would love to see him take that as a bit of “payback” for missing the TC series. Horses sure have a way of keeping one humble.

Bummer. No idea how to bet this one so just watch. Weather forecast has changed from earlier ( of course worse) but is currently 50/50, in the 60s s temp wise. Chilly and damp. The big deluge is supposedly tonite but they often can’t pinpoint things around here, who knows. Hopefully not another one in the slop.

Ill pick a few tomorrow but skip stopping by the Racino tomorrow with actual money.

Is there any chance that he could run in the Belmont? It doesn’t sound like it is very invasive surgery, and the Belmont is five weeks away, isn’t it?

I do hope they aim him at the Travers.

Usually they get entrapped and then freed up quickly so you could run them back immediately. It sounds as if that wasn’t the case with him which is why he is having surgery today instead of next week.

The BH article I just read said surgery likely tomorrow (5/3).

Ironic that Roadster had a similar (not exactly the same; left side tie-back) issue as Omaha Beach which was diagnosed/treated last year after running 3rd in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) late last year.

Glad that this was caught before Omaha Beach ran out of gas during the Derby (which was, IMO, likely to happen but no way to know for sure).

Looks like Todd Pletcher may make a liar out of me as he is in talks with Mike Smith to possibly take over the mount on 30-1 shot Cutting Humor. If he does he will have to pay double jock mount so Corey Lanerie will get something from it but I am sure won’t be happy.
ETA that I was wrong, they are pulling Corey for Mike. I am truly astonished.

I hope so. It’s a pretty common surgery isn’t it? There are other good races for Omaha Beach, but it would have been so nice to see his connections win the Derby.

He will not make the Belmont.

That’s a good article, thanks for the link.

Haikal is out of the Derby, due to his hoof abscess.

Knew the Haikal scratch was coming. No way should a horse with a sore foot/abscess be racing in the derby.

Sorry for Corey Lanerie. Kind of a sh*t move on behalf of Todd this close to race day.

What does everyone think of War of Will? I know he’s coming from the 1 post and he is coming into the race really rank. Has to be the most attractive horse in the derby this year. He looked great in his earlier races and workouts. He is going to have to go for it out of the gate.

Or Tax? Tax looked great in his works. Could he be a sleeper this year?

My favorite in the derby is Improbable and he has the gate position to make it happen and we know he doesn’t mind mud. I am very worried about his mental game tomorrow.

WinWinWin I think will hit the board. He will coming hauling down the stretch if he has space to do so.

Maximum Security I really like, has all the promise in the world and the PP to make it happen as well. Could be a dangerous one.

I like Tacitus and I want to see a Tapit with the derby but he just looks like a slug out there. I think he will break slow, it traffic, and not have enough kick to come down the stretch.

Here’s a really good interview with Richard Mandella. Omaha Beach will be taking 2-3 weeks off, then going back into training.

Not that I’m a huge fan of Pletcher, but not sure he could have done much if this was the owners decision.

Mike could have said no. Not that he ever would have. He’s just to “snake oil salesman-ish”. Never really be a fan of his & he’s only gotten worse in the past few years.

Pleased to read that Omaha Beach’s surgery went well (or at least according to the BH article). Looking forward to his return to racing ::slight_smile:

Haikal, IMO the scratch was inevitable. With all the public focus on equine racing and safety ATM, no way should Haikal have been in the gate (which he won’t be). If anything had happened to Haikal during the race, a huge magnifying glass would be put on all his connections and second guessing every single decision they made. Unfortunate but IMO true.

Feel bad for Corey but for the jocks, racing is a job as much as any job is for many of us. He lost his ride on the morning line favorite. He wants to ride in the Derby. He now has a ride worked out aboard Cutting Humor. Mike is at the point in his career where he can be choosy about who and where he rides. When he’s at home at Santa Anita, he’s not usually out there every day riding just about every race on the card. He’s on the better horses (usually, not always) and not in every race.

Maybe Mike is snake-oil salesman-ish but every ride he’s on may be his last… gotta make 'em count as much as possible. Look at Gary Stevens. How many times did he retire before he got read the riot act after his last ride ended his career with a back injury. It wasn’t even during a race but a post parade incident at Del Mar.
