Flies are inactive at night bc they need light to visually guide them ,.,
as well, its cooler for fly sheet use bc the sun is not beating down on the horse.
Its literally been ‘night and day’ for my bug sensitive horse.
He was frantic from the flies by July/August, altho he had a small run in shed,
but by trying to avoid them, he was getting beat up.
He is a different animal in summer now.
He thrives on NT turn out, plus he has 2 stall fans for during the day when inside.
Does he go out with others? Some of those scrapes look like bites.
I’d keep him in during the day with a fan and put him out at night with a flysheet. At night he might not need the fly mask for the ERU as well- ask the vet.
He is turned out alone - there’s another horse but he’s kept separate (with a 4ft gap between their fences) because he can be rather aggressive.
