This Triple feels different

Most/all states track incidents on race tracks within the state. It may not be easy to find out the information and it may not be in a nice spreadsheet format such as the example from New York but the data is tracked.

The Jockey Club also has their Equine Injury Database (EID) which has been collecting data since 2008.

There are links from there on tracks and what the tracks report to the EID. The EID’s focus is all race related fatalities (die or euthanized as a direct result of injuries sustained participating in a race or within 72 of such race).

Lucky score on the poster!!!

Saw an interview with BB after the Belmont and he said Justify isn’t the “puppy dog” that AP is and that Justify does bite… sounds like just about everyone around Justify including BB has been bitten

I only do spreadsheets when I have to. If you feel that you have a valid argument, why not crunch the numbers and let us know the results? Although without knowing how many horses per day train over the track, it’s hard to see if having a breakdown rate of X% is significant.

Have we ever gone off the rails in this topic. Which gets me back to how irritating this so called racing forum can be and how it differs from every other forum in COTH as far as I can tell. We started off with the pinnacle of the sport and in the middle --in the same thread!–someone starts bringing up rescues and dumped horses like that has any relevance to Justify and now we have moved onto breakdowns. Like God forbid a racing fan enjoy any aspect of the sport.

Because I’m getting on and spent almost every weekend for at least the last 20 years at some track, I’ve probably seen more live racing than most on here. I’ve seen breakdowns. I hate them. Any thinking person would. Go For Wand almost drove me out of racing for good. But I came to terms with it because it is not the entire sport. It’s still pretty damn rare if a person follows a single circuit as opposed to races from everywhere like on TVG. There is a lot of beauty in the sport as well as dedicated people, great stories and wonderful horses–and not all of that is necessarily connected with the big races on a Saturday.

I already can see someone firing up their keyboard –But the breakdowns! Of course the unsaid --sometimes!–premise is what terrible people we are to follow a sport where that can happen and how much better they are being skeptical of racing. Fine. Have at it. But why is this in Justify’s Triple Crown thread?

And while Baffert can polarizing figure at times, this story is just neat.

I have to say thank you for this! It got to the point I stopped following my own thread.

I know. Some really wonderful and informative posters don’t seem to participate much any more. Now I haven’t polled them to find out why they have moved on but when the OP stops following her original on topic post which happens to involve one of the hottest topics in the sport, it says a lot.

I have given some thought to the original question here. I was a kid when Secretariat won. And I had his pictures taped to the walls of my bedroom, much to my parents consternation.

I loved watching AP- he made it look easy. And I was all about Justify this year, but when he accomplished this feat- and it is really amazing, I just didn’t have the same jump up and down feeling. I was thrilled- no mistake. And profoundly moved by Mike Smith, but it wasn’t the same.

Secretariat set the bar so high, with the way that he won the Belmont, that it is hard to compare any other horse to him. Alydar and Affirmed dueling it out? Awesome. Ali and Frazier on the track.

Justify may be all that. He really has the goods, up until now. But the scintillating heart stopping Oh My God effect? I just dunno.

That’s because anyone can sign up for COTH. You don’t have to be involved in horses in any way whatsoever. Is there a racing forum where you have to pass a test or credentials or something that limits participation to those who are worthy?
