This year's Safe Sport training course

you are crossing terms, A lawsuit tends to refer to a civil “case” as opposed to a criminal case, the primary reason for statutes of limitations is to prevent potential defendants from being subject to unfair prosecution or other legal action.

I was a regional equine youth director for about five years in the 1990s, one of the items that I implemented was no adult was to ever be alone with any youth that was not theirs. This was done to protect the rights of both parties

Whether civil or criminal, there needs to be an “end” to a legal matter. If you (g) were harmed civilly or criminally, you need to address that harm legally within a certain time frame. It would be highly prejudicial to the defendant if you waited 10 years, when all the witnesses have moved/died/forgotten, no evidence exists, etc.

It may surprise you to learn that many crimes have no statute of limitations. That includes certain types of homicide but also many sexual offenses against minors.

I actually am very aware. I was just explaining why the statute exists as the poster upthread didn’t understand the need for a statute of limitations.

I didn’t intend to cover every circumstance.

Right, no statute of limitations is typically limited to particularly heinous criminal action. The definition of that can and has expanded in the majority of states. In this case, that’s not a bad thing.

I had the long one last year. IIRC, more than an hour. This year about 45 minutes

I did the long one last year, and found much of it to be ridiculous for an adult competitor. It was geared around the assumption that adults are coaches or parents, and had a ton of completely irrelevant videos about how important sports are for children’s mental health.

A lot of these videos should be reserved for trainers and coaches - they simply don’t apply to competitors.

very likely from a legal standpoint everyone gets the same training.

Considering the high profile personas getting tapped and some of the sad stories here about women not being supported, I think the minor inconvenience faced yearly is not too much to ask

Knowledge gives you the ability to identify behaviors that you witness around the barn. Aside from the hour or less it takes (yeah, last year’s was longer for me), I dont see the real problem. I have SEEN bullying in a barn - and at the ring side. I am sure you have as well .
(schooling shows, so and a few, 20, years ago, so no reporting. But I know it still happens.).

I keep my horses at home. There are no children at my trainer’s barn. I’m not sure I’ve actually seen a child at a dressage show I’ve attended, and I’ve certainly never observed or interacted with one. I’m never around children in my usual life (by design). The training is a complete waste of time for me. And yet I have to waste hours of my life every year on it so I can show (internet in BFE is very slow). But they require I check the box so I mute the sound and just click random options when I have to to “pass” the training.

Do I think there should be mandatory training for coaches and parents? Yes. Do I support protecting children? Yes. Do I think this is the best way to do it? Absolutely not.

Doesnt matter what you think. It’s federally required. By an actual act of COngress.

I know. I’m still allowed to think it’s idiotic and borderline useless for most of us :woman_shrugging:

My husband did not have to take SafeSport training as a member of USA Cycling as his team was a masters program with no interaction with children. He is also a member of USRowing and he had to take the training as this team included junior rowers. I thought that was interesting.

There is no way to fast forward through , or even to speed up the audio such as YouTube allows. The sessions do seem to drag on and on. But the answers are largely, to me at least, based on common sense. I found that I can do other things on my iphone at the same time as SS is running on my ipad. It has been very easy to pass this way.

I doubt I am alone in taking this approach.

I must say I am another person thinking safe sport training needs a rethink as me taking it will in no way make any child safer - I keep my horses at home, I show off my trailer, my sole interaction with kids at horse shows is trying to not run them over in the warm up ring.

I don’t think there’s any way they can differentiate between who might or might not pose a risk to minors at a horse show. So we all have to take it.

But if you see the comment above from someone whose husband participates as a member of USA Cycling (also an Olympic sport, yes?), he doesn’t have to take it because his team is adults and he isn’t around children in cycling. So clearly it’s possible for the NGO to differentiate in some sports…

I don’t have trouble taking the course, but I happen to think it is excessive and not done well. It’s more of a matter of the Center for Safe Sport justifying its existence and its staff. You know what would keep interest? Actual stories that have happened and how they should have been handled. We also need courses on diversity, equity and inclusion, preventing animal cruelty and on bullying for adults (and probably others). My workplace requires all kinds of trainings, including HIPAA, data security, diversity/equity/inclusion, fraud/waste/abuse and none of these trainings are more than 45 minutes. Folks, for most of us, this is a hobby, not an occupation. They can get it done much more efficiently.

Agreed. Some of my job’s compulsory annual trainings provide an option of taking a test. If you fail the test, go back and review the materials, or just review sections at your discretion. That seems like a reasonable option for a refresher, at least for adult amateurs.

If Congress thinks this is so important, why are they not addressing non-Olympic sports? My husband referees high school football and has never heard of SafeSport and doesn’t have to take any equivalent training. As someone who is up close to kids and seeing interactions of coaches and kids, it would make more sense for him to take it!

A close friend’s kids place soccer locally and compete regionally and she has never heard of Safe Sport…
