Thoroughbred Lines for Hunters

Freud has several (blingy) offspring in the HJ circuit including in Ocala. You wouldn’t know they are TBs if you didn’t have an eye for the head Freud gives his kids, and he does stamp a specific type that is more suited to HJ.

Giants Causeway’s other stallion sons seem more suited to eventing, but I love Freud.

Innkeeper, Artax, Tapit, Petionville, Big Brown, Candy Ride, Hennessey, Johannesburg, Dixie Union seem to have the cantery step that HJers want. All make good eventers too.

I love threads like these because I learn so much about my horse’s lineage!!

So my guy the GC grandson (sire side) with the Candy Ride full sister grand dam ALSO has Johannesburg/Hennessy on the the dam side.

Super cool to see my blind selection correlates to some desirable hunter lines.

In my experience, In Reality offspring make lovely hunters. His line has been revitalized through Tiznow. There was an article in BH about it. I’ll see if I can find it. My geldiing who is a grandson of In Reality is always mistaken for a warmblood.

I’ve seen quite a few hunter quality movers/jumpers from Awesome Again lines. I look for Blushing Groom and Roberto lines for hunter prospects, but those are getting to be further and further back in lineage of modern thoroughbreds.

Love my guy by Court Vision. Great jumper, mover, and brain. Just finished first year showing.

He’s lovely! I have a Court Vision mare and she is the opposite of a hunter. lol.

Thanks! Oh how interesting!!!

I’ve got Red Ransom (dam) and Storm Cat (sire) pretty close on my guys pedigree. My boy is pretty awesome and quite the looker. He could have gone either way, but I chose dressage.

My bestie has a Tiznow grandson who has a very WB look and hunter type movement. Personality wise, he’s a 1200lb Labrador with hooves (I call him Clifford because he’s a big red dog, lol) and it’s hard to believe anyone ever looked at him and thought “oh yeah, that’s a racehorse.”

My last horse was from a Hennesy line and was so easy to ride and had that nice slow hunter canter. Didn’t jump in great form for anything under 3’6", but he was 17’3" and basically just stepped over smaller. My current horse’s sire is Go For Gin, damsire is Eastern Echo and he jumps with his knees up to his eyeballs over every jump regardless of height. He doesn’t have a hunter brain, but he’s fun for derbies. I would love something with Go For Gin in the pedigree for my next horse for the athleticism with Hennessy for the brain.

Thanks!

Seriously one of the best sporthorse/jump sires of the 90s.

I had a Lido Palace gelding that was an absolutely stunning mover and jumped great! He was very attractive, deep black with two white feet. Would love another one!
