Thoroughbred sire - Big Game

Does anyone have any information on what the stallion Big Game would contribute to a sport horse pedigree. he was born in 1939 so obviously is a few generations back in any modern pedigree, but I have seen his name mentioned in the past as being a good influence, but never with an explanation why

He’s got at least 37 different direct get who have FEI level offspring or descendants. They are about 10 to 1 mares. As damsire, he has at least 44 grandget with FEI level descendants. 20 of them are stallions. One of his daughters is tail female to Miner’s Lamp, sire of the great eventing TB Miner’s Frolic; another is the dam of Hethersett, tail male grandsire of Julio Mariner. He’s the second damsire of Al Hattab and Vaguely Noble.

His sire was Bahram, who won the British Triple Crown, and I’ve read that “all Bahrams jump.” His line is notable for its athleticism.

Big Game is one of the most successful TB lines in FEI level sport that I have found, but almost always through his daughters. If you add them all together, probably a couple of hundred or more of his descendants have FEI level results.

Interestingly you can find both Big Game & Heathersett in the pedigree of of the GRP FS Champion De Luxe

I’ve seen his son Broom in Sporthorse pedigrees. I looked up his progeny … Not surprisingly there are a lot of offspring with hunting related themes… But Bigamy and Bigamist? Really, foal owners couldn’t do better than that??

Thank you Viney- I knew he was a good name to see, but I didnt have any data to prove why - now i know!!

World Cup Champion 2012 Flexible’s dam sire Safari xx is a grand son of Big
Game via his dam. Our 2 home bred Flexible fillies out of a Mezcalero-TB dam line are line bred to Big Game x 3 and Nasrullah x 5, Nearco x 6.

Furthermore, Bahram xx, the sire of Big Game xx, also sired Persian Gulf xx, grandsire of Marlon xx, who had significant influence in Holstein.

Big Game is also behind Lorenzaccio.

In order to gain an appreciation of the strains at work in Vinnie Roe’s pedigree it is necessary to begin with Indian Ridge. The following factors seem especially important when analysing his most successful offspring. To begin with Indian Ridge was 4x4 to the Court Martial mare Discipliner, whose granddam Louise was herself 4x3 to the mare Fascination (by Royal Hampton -Charm). This was further reinforced by the appearance (in Indian Ridge) of Farthing Damages and Ballyogan, both bred on very similar lines to Court Martial.

Secondly, Indian Ridge was 5x6 to Bull Lea, himself by Bull Dog, a grandson of the mare Concertina. Thirdly, Phoenissa, the dam of Indian Ridge’s grandsire Lorenzaccio was 4x4 to Friar’s Daughter via The Phoenix (who adds a further strain of the mare Charm) and Bahram. Indian Ridge also carried a further line of Bahram, via Queen Of Baghdad, and it should be noted that Friar’s Daughter was in fact a granddaughter of the aforementioned Concertina. Finally Ahonoora was 3x4 to the three quarter siblings Kalmia and Borealis.

Turning now to Definite Article, the most obvious feature of his pedigree was the 3x3 cross of Lorenzaccio via a son and daughter; and with Lorenzaccio’s dam being 4x4 to Friar’s Daughter, and his sire providing Kalmia, we immediately have a further build-up of these important broodmares.

One can hardly go wrong in sport horse breeding with any of such wonderful classic distance type of horses that had/have stamina AND speed.
