Thorpedo Anna to Run in Travers

She was amazing.

Maybe we will see her in the BC Classic
she was still gaining as they crossed the wire. Another few feet! Reminds me of Zenyatta and Blame
just ran out of track. What a filly!

McPeek has said no Classic. Next race (if all is well) the Cotillion at Parx ($1,000,000 purse) and then the BC Distaff.

McPeek has done a truly wonderful job promoting/sharing his filly via social media. That’s how it’s done.

That race was AMAZING! One of the best I’ve seen in a long time. I was cheering mildly at first then in deep stretch started yelling, and then as she started gaining in those last strides started yelling and clapping such that my dogs came running to see if I was okay.

I do not get why Fierceness was suddenly tossed out of everyone’s minds after the Derby–plenty of Derby favorites have inexplicably flopped in the Run for the Roses only to be back to their beast mode forms in following races. That he was ever 7-1 was an insane overlay to me. I’m not a betting woman, but my mind had Fierceness, Thorpedo Anna, and Dornach as the top horses–almost got the trifecta there.

Dornach was my Derby pick (he’s a local horse, and the fact he won the SA Derby over the Baffert entries on Baffert’s home turf was just :man_cook:  ). Also like with Fierceness, his poor Derby finish didn’t discount him in my book. I was thrilled to see him win the Belmont–hope he came out healthy yesterday.

Thorpedo Anna will obliterate the Distaff. I’d love to see her in the Classic, but that’s coming from a selfish fan’s persective. I’m just happy it was such a great race!

The commentators on Saratoga Live yesterday said that Thorpedo Anna got an ovation from the crowd when she got back.

A great race. I believe she will continue to run Great Races.

Gotta love her trainer and owners for giving it a shot. First place in the Alabama was $330,000. Nothing is certain in horse racing, but she probably would have won. Second place in the Travers was $250,000. So running her in the Travers cost the owners $80,000.

Such math is sort of silly, but I’m a data geek, enjoy playing with numbers.

Ah, but that $80,000 loss significantly improves her value in the long run. A second-and-gaining loss by a head to the top 3yro colts in the country skyrocketed her from “a really nice filly” to “a spectacular, eyebrow-raising-special filly.” That has to markedly improve the value of any offspring she produces as well as the value of Thorpedo Anna herself. (I, too, like numbers!)

That was amazing - I was yelling at the TV like I used to do in Zenyatta days! Much to the confusion of the terriers.

I just saw that his operation is the newest addition to Horse Country Tours in Kentucky. Good for him.

TA was the winner in everyone’s hearts on Travers Day. To lose by a nose is hardly a loss. IMHO her race was for more impressive than Fierceness who pretty much stopped running mid stretch and the only thing that saved him was the lead he had gained out of the turn. He was gassed by the finish line. One more stride and TA would’ve had him.

In all honesty, I don’t think anyone in the McPeek barn can feel shame in that loss. She defeated the top 3 year old males on Saturday and did it in dazzling fashion. That race just increased her value exponentially and took her from being the most impressive filly of the year to one of the most impressive horses of the year in all of the crop.

I was also happy to see McPeek’s KY property on the tour schedule now. His operation is very humble, on the smaller scale with great attention to detail. The horses there spend a lot of time hacking out and enjoying the R&R of being away from the track life.

Thorpedo Anna ran an awesome race.
But give Fierceness some credit–he kept on going. I didn’t think he was a mile and a quarter horse, but, dang, he did it.

I think it was TA’s trainer that said she galloped out after the wire but “you don’t win by galloping out”, he has said over and over how impressive she is and how they are so lucky to have her in their barn. (The galloping out reminded me of Rachel Alexandra’s close finish with Macho Again. She held him off and galloped out but he stopped after the wire like he’d been shot)

Small? Humble?

His video tour says differently: Magdalena Farm – Facilities & Services (mcpeekracing.com)

yes. while the land mass isnt all that small, his barns are not huge and he has 60 total stalls which is about the size of a boarding facility where I am from. this includes broodmares, yearlings, etc. not just racehorses. Google map his property, the facilities are not large by any means. He has lot of pasture land though. Are there smaller operations out there, oh yes. But there are far bigger ones with much more pizzaz about them as well.
I think Mcpeek and his crew are very humble people, yes.

Have you been there? Have you seen the facility? I’m curious what your opinion is based on.

Then I guess you and I have very different ideas of what constitutes small and humble.
