Thoughts on fencing around my septic....

Good points Fanfayre. I would like to add that if you ever sell, or get the septic tank serviced, they charge less if you know where the hatches to the tank are, and it makes everything easier if you have the location of the tank and mound on paper.

Well the hatches are obvious, it’s just the pipes leading to the drain field mound that concern me. I have a Glendon system, if that helps?

Glendon is just the manufacturer of your treatment plant, the brand name; it’s the Rambo of treatment plants. You really should get hold of your septic layout, and all the details for your Glendon, with the specifics as well as the layout- pump type, capacity, head, etc. As I said, it’s something the planner/engineer if not the installer should have presented to you at completion, just like your fireplace installer, gas fitter, etc do. If not, your health department will have copies they can provide you, you just may have to pay them to make the copies . You need it for your maintenance and operating plan too.

What you may need to do is start shoveling out (or very carefully with a small mini-excavator) along the base of your mound along the edge closest to your tanks, just as if you were excavating an archaeological dig, about 1-2’ wide. Within 24" or so (maybe deeper but not likely in this climate) you should come across some warning tape, like they lay in electrical trenches. You may also run into a layer of sand which will let you know to stop digging because you’re coming to the piping. That’s your supply line and now you know where NOT to dig posts!
Another way is to get an instrument specifically used for searching for buried water lines and walk it along your mound base. It will signal when it’s found your pipe.
Or, start shoveling at your Glendon hatches until you uncover the pipe, then follow and dig it out to the mound.

Too bad I’m a couple of islands over- I’d come help you find it. I went to the WI Horse Trials several years ago, but I won’t be competing there in the near future, unless I can find an alternate horse, even if you wanted to wait until July…
