Thoughts on Metal or Shingle Barn Roof

When we built a few years ago, we compared a good metal roof to a shingled roof and found the shingled one to be cheaper. Couple that with it matching the house and there was just no question. Of course I live in the same town where the shingles are made, so maybe that’s why they were cheap (and we’re talking high end architectural shingles)

We have a screw-down Galvalume roof on the barn (insulated with foam panels) and a standing-seam one on the house. The house was formerly roofed with shingles and, yes, the rain is more noticeable now (a mist sounds like light rain, light rain sounds like moderate, etc.), but it’s not at all unpleasant.

We did have an issue with birds tunneling into the foam board at the eaves of the barn, in-between the corrugations, which we solved by stuffing the gaps with steel wool; this one-time fix has worked for several years. Other than that, the only maintenance has been once replacing a couple of the screws that had popped out.

Are you done with your roofing. Even I would recommend shingle roofing. I have done asphalt shingle roof for my garage by Royal York roofing. I know the coast i little bit high but it is durable. There is more details on this link http://www.royalyorkroofing.ca/services/roofing/shingle-roofing/ If you are worried about the cost you can go for the traditional 3 tab shingle . The manufactures often offer upto 25 years warranty .

Insurance is higher for a shingle roof than metal,or at least it was in OK.
Metal lasts so much longer. If you go with high quality house grade and vapor barrier or insulation the noise is a pleasant sound when it rains. I’ve had no extra issues with heat or water and I’m on my 4 th barn with metal roof.
I had a metal roof on a house and lived it,too.

Heaven forbid you ever have a fire, but someone told me in that instance, melting shingles dripped and burned the horses.

But that might be the least of your worries. I have metal roofs. Some insulated some not. Insulated is better.

Shingles in our windy country are just not smart.

Guarantees don’t mean much when you keep getting them blown away.

With our fires, everyone is going to metal roofs.

There are many kinds of metal roofs, some that look like tile or shingles.
Also much less weight on your roof and so house frame with metal roof, compared with tile or even shingles.

The only reason to go with other than metal is if someone wants a specific look, then yes, whatever you like is best.
As far as what is the most efficient for a roof, metal is the best for that.
