Thoughts on stirrup irons?

I also use the simple irons with 50 degree eye and love them, although a recent fall where I SAW my foot momentarily caught has convinced me I should look into something else. Those Icelandic irons sound interesting.

I have long ridden in jointed stirrups and love them. I can flex my ankle to apply aids, and the stirrups follow me. I don’t notice the stirrups when I ride in them.

Metalab Icelandic irons–I ordered mine online from The Tack Room in Laramie. Wyoming. I’d forgotten that they are a double “s”, but the certainly work!

I got hung up and dragged across a frozen field when I was a kid, so I’m rather paranoid about footwear/irons, etc.

I use the wide footbed, non-jointed MDC stirrups. I originally had them on my jump saddle, and then when I transitioned to dressage, they came with me. (Here’s the link: http://mdcstirrups.com/hunter_classic.html )

I LOVE them… by far my favorite stirrup. While the wide footbed was nice for jumping, I’ve found that the dispersed pressure is also easier on my bad knees. The footbed is also a combo of traditional and grated, but without as much stick as the cheese-graters. While I’ve never felt uncomfortable getting my foot out in an emergency, the do offer more grip than your traditional rubber. They’re a wee bit pricey, but I’ve used mine heavily for 4+years and they still are in great shape.
