Thoughts on this mare’s canter and potential hunter stallion candidates?

That is my CHILD. Thank you.

Good foot and bone without a lot of height makes me lean to Holsteiners. My horse has one half brother (same sire, Colman) standing in the US—Cool Jazz. Colmans have the best temperament and a lot of jump to the canter…sometimes too much but might make an interesting TB cross. And they have great feet.

Here’s a shot of Colman. Mine is a red spitting image of him.

I also really like Amazing for hunters. This is his last season for fresh cooled. Lots of bone but also some chance of an overall larger horse than you want. Tends to throw chrome. Also tends to throw cooler headed horses than most Balou du Rouet.

These don’t look like two bay boys at all but I like ‘em!!!

@IPEsq Colman is gorgeous. I watched some videos on youtube of his babies and they’re all just adorable.

I have to say, going through all these stallions has sent me down a very deep rabbit hole.

Of course, I don’t know the first thing about picking a stallion for a mare, and he’s almost certainly bigger than OP would be looking for, but I have fallen in love with this guy: https://www.superiorequinesires.com/grey-top

He seems so good natured and willing. Ears always pricked forward, no big explosions, the occasional head toss but doesn’t grab the bit and run - a very willing partner who is very quite eager to do his job. I just love his expression.

Just have to say I love the pumpkin photo. All of the coordinating colors, the composition, the smile on your face… just so nice in many ways.

Westporte. Had several friends a few years back who used him on JC mares built like OPs mare and about the same size with very good results. These babies would be be 6-8 years old now, all broke out and trained up well and, far as I know, still going soundly.

I think this is a question for @MsRidiculous!

My chestnut mare would like to have a word with you.

Looks like I’m going to have a large herd of shiny chestnuts knocking at my door soon. Just give me 20 minutes. I need to run to the store and stock up on carrots. :grinning:

Grey Top horses tend to have really good temperament but some of them don’t jump in very good form for a hunter prospect. They can also be on the larger size.

Well I’m at least glad to hear he throws his good temperament! Maybe one day I’ll find one of his that flunked out of hunter school and turn it into an eventer or something.

My old, red boy is on his way for some carrots! His coat isn’t so great right now (high summer, lives outdoors) but he hopes you won’t hold that against him! He’ll show you all his tricks for a carrot though!

To be sure, when my horses are in good coats I do think my bay has a better looking coat. My bay dapples and my chestnut doesn’t. So that might be the deciding factor for me.

I’ll be looking for him. I’ll stuff him full of carrots and give him a quick groom before I send him back your way.

I have another chestnut who’d like to have a word with you. Lol.

That’s (obviously) a broodmare who lives out 24/7. Photo taken in late June of last year. She did get a bath beforehand, but zero additional grooming was involved that day - I didn’t even have time to brush her tail out. Good nutrition takes most of the work out of grooming.

Sorry for the hijack, OP.

Maybe all the gorgeous chestnut pictures are swaying me, but Beau Balou jumped into my mind. He’s younger so it’s too early to really see offspring performance, but he himself has shown good performance in the hunter and jumper rings, plus great inspection scores. Great canter. I think he’s just under 17hh, but doesn’t really look it, very balanced and not at all lanky.
