I came to Eventing late in the game (mid-late '90s) & was interested to see riders come off & get a leg-up & back on course.
I was used to the “feet touch the ground & you’re Eliminated” Rule.
And seeing riders on the neck, hanging under the neck, performing all sorts of gymnastics to stay on.
I missed MP’s remark, but did enjoy (very young!) Ralph Hill hoping for a miracle.
I cliniced with him early 2000s & greatly enjoyed it.
He compared my barely-16H TB to a Fiat ðŸ˜
& was very patient with DH & his very-new-to-jumping TWH - also a loud sabino strawberry roan 😎
Evenings he told us stories about Burghley & John Henry.
One thing he said has stuck with me:
“I’d rather have one to love on than a barn full of talent.”
