Seresto collar is amazing. Only picked one tick this year and it was dead- picked more live ones off of myself! Now, we need a human version
Out here in the wilds of North Central Kansas it is indeed Tick Season, and we have LOTS of them making it into the house via our farm dog Aussies. I vacuum, spray and generally fidget constantly, skin crawling, because it is NOTHING to find 4 ticks in a day strolling across my neck, feet, and furniture. It has been this way every spring weāve been here in our country home (thatās 3 years) and Iāve just gotten to the point where I CANNOT SLEEP because it is inevitable that sometime pre-dawn I will jerk to full alert when a tick meanders about my person.
As if this isnāt bad enough, Iām constantly finding ticks on the horses and indoor-only cats. Equispot is a joke, as is Frontline, Bravecto, Advantix and all the rest. We still find engorged ticks all over everybody, and Iām still sleeping in full alert. I wanted something that would REPEL the damned bloodsuckers from 10 feet without making the dogsā uncomfortable and the cats sick. I wanted something that would give coverage to every single part of the horses.
Springtime sent me an interesting flyer on their āBugoffā product, and the main (only) active ingredient being garlic started me researching the idea of putting EVERYONE on garlic. We were looking at yet another monthly purchase of Advantix II, Deep Woods Off, and several bottles of equine fly spray (canāt remember the nameāblack bottleāAbsorbine brand???) and I just ordered the Bugoff instead. Came in 2 days, and I started the horses on 1/2 dose twice a day, and the dogs on full dose dumped over their raw chicken. Dogs never hesitatedāthey gobbled it down without problem. The horses werenāt thrilled, but being piggies all, they ate it. CatsāehāIāve given up and put Advantix II on them to tide them over until the dogs effectively repel the ticks.
NOTE: I researched the issue of cats and garlic toxicity THOROUGHLY. Properly (and sparingly) dosed, cats have no problem with garlic. It is ONION that is a massive no-no to both cats and dogs.
Will update. Alsoā¦Iāll be checking out that essential oilāwas it rose geranium?āand may try that on ME.
I am SOOOO done with ticksā¦and flies!
Ack, Kat the Horse, :dead:
That sounds like when I was a working student in Pennsylvania years ago. The ticks were rampant down there and it was nothing to get a handful after only minutes of walking or sitting on a lawn. Blech.
Those were a different tick than we have here in my NY woods. Here itās deer ticks. The ones in PA were rounder and more crab-like.
I sure know what the frantic āsomething is walking on meā dance looks like. Yuck!
I really like Herbaria soapās Rose Geranium. They also have an insect soap called Camperās Choice. I donāt find the walking ticks when I use that Rose Geranium soap.
Iāve also used Green Mountain Tick Repellent, which is a natural product as well. Not as effective and it needs to be sprayed on a lot.

That was on the news this am, telling dog owners to be aware of ticks and the diseases they carry. Where I live they usually carry more than 1 disease. Ticks have gotten very scary.
Can anyone using the Seresto or Preventic collars let me know how nasty smelling the collars are? Our aussie is a big snuggler, and loves to sleep on our pillows in bed.
Iād rather not buy a collar that will be too stinky to have in such close quarters.
Heās on Sentinel, so maybe I should try the parastar or Bravecto.
Anyone have any side effects of those two?
Is Sentinel and Bravecto okay to give together?
Preventic collar had a dusting of powder when new. No odor I could detectā¦

I am trying rose geranium oil on the dogs this year. Supposedly a dab on the neck and at the dock of the tail. The only thing I know so far is that my house smells pretty good right now. I hope it works.[/QUOTE]
Definitely works for my dogs. But the smell is very āperfumeyā. Makes the rolls-in-manure dog unhappy.
