Tips For Outdoor Wash Rack!

My dad and I built this one a little over a year ago: https://fordtraktor.shutterfly.com/pictures/191#190

I’ve added more limestone dust (built it up an inch or two) and interlocking mats. I wouldn’t change anything about it. I like having the taller inset posts because you can crosstie to those, then with young horses I put up the stall guards in the front to keep them quieter/make it feel more like a stall. It works great. also the inset posts ensure you are working on the mats and the horse isn’t half out of the crossties like they are if you tie right at the front.

Mine is 10 by 12 with the posts inset by 2 feet. I like the narrower width to keep the horses more still.

I like the mats over stone instead of concrete just fine and it was a lot cheaper. it drains well.

Mine is in my signature. I don’t have concrete either.

I just half way put in an outdoor wash area at the spur of the moment. My husband is building his man cave (a 30x40 garage that he NEEDS to work on our vehicles and tractor etc-honestly he just NEEDS to get his crap, from honest tools to a 1952 riding lawnmower, out of MY BARN!). So, during the pouring of the concrete slab for the garage they over ordered by about a yard of high end concrete and wanted to know where we wanted the extra to go. I’d been thinking how nice it would be to have an area to wash a horse that wouldn’t turn the red clay to mud, so the guys did a quick frame job with spare 2x4s and I now have an 8x12 concrete slab set next to pasture fence on two sides just outside the turnout around the barn. It sits up on top of the clay base and so the next step will be to build up an incline of crusher run around it. It natural slopes a bit and will drain to where my barn roof drain goes. I plan to sink in a couple of tall posts to cross tie to. It’s right next to a frost free hydrant, so convenient to only have to have a relatively short horse for washing. I hate the mess of rolling up a long hose, and honestly for washing a horse would consider one of those little phone cord style ones if they made one that was a decent quality.
