Suppose, for the sake of argument, that Seger was MJ’s human baby and that this BB was a forum for child care issues.
MJ posts about numerous health problems with her baby, members try to help, offer to send her things, give her advice, etc. MJ continues to post about the situation but there are strange inconsistencies in her story that start to worry the other members. Ultimately, the baby Seger dies from neglect and malnutrition due to MJ’s lack of care. The dire situation that MJ described on the BB is by her own doing. A medical doctor (a DVM euthanized MJ’s horse) sees the ailing baby but cannot save it.
At this point, the authorities are called in. MJ faces serious criminal charges but because she is a minor, she is placed in the care of the state in an attempt to give her the help she needs.
And if the whole baby neglect saga was chronicled on this BB, we would alert the authorities and give them the relevant correspondence. This would not be the first time this has happened in cyberspace.
Allowing an animal in your care to die due to neglect also carries criminal charges. There are numerous precedents for prosecuting these cases; many people have served prison sentences for neglect/abuse of animals and often these people are banned from keeping animals again, as they should be.
Why does this child still have a pony? Why is she telling us she’s ‘moved on with her riding career’? She needs help ASAP. It has gone beyond delusional-child-fantasy time – she watched a horse die an agonal death due to her own neglect and concocted a fantasy version of it on this BB.
I’m sure we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg of this girl’s problems. Presumably she has parents, and as she is a minor, they are equally culpable in this horse’s death. I get the feeling that hers is a troubled family that needs help all around. There are professionals out there – both animal and human welfare agencies – that are trained to intervene in these situations.
Let’s be done with it. Time to get this girl some help – isn’t that what she came here for?
