Too much selenium?

There’s no way to tell how upright feet are from front views. Pictures angled down, as these are, skew a lot of vertical perspective.

I don’t see the kind of cracks shown in the original #5. I see a LOT of growth rings, and do see questionable hoof quality. Some side views - camera at ground level, lens perpendicular to the side of the foot - would be really helpful

So, this guy is getting basically just Orchardgrass hay, and California Trace. It’s very possible the hay is just really unbalanced, and CT isn’t enough. It’s really impossible to know, but my guess is this is really dietary in nature, and not a Se toxicity issue.

Interestingly, I was around a person this past weekend who had selenium poisoning in her horse… She said her horse’s muzzle had a blue tint (he’s white there) and had behavioral changes, and she called people in her horse community who said have the horse blood tested. His selenium was sky high. She cut selenium as much as possible from the diet. She saw that I feed Nicker Makers treats in food and pointed out the selenium warning on the back of the label. It seems to be on all Purina treats. We then looked at the feed labels to see selenium content, which apparently seems high in Purina products. She called Purina and had a “front line” person who was clueless, I mentioned she could talk to a nutritionist at Purina. I have a nutritional spreadsheet that I plan to revisit.

Not even sure the nutritionists at Purina are all that great. :-/ Ran into one who just SWORE that Omolene 200 was just a great feed for nearly every horse out there! No, that NSC isn’t a problem at all! :sigh:

Front line people in most of these companies have no business handing out nutrition advice.

Probably all of the major brands have at least 1 good nutritionist on staff, but GETTING to them is not always easy. I’ve talked to a couple people who got great info from a Purina nutritionist, but that was something like 1 out or 4 calls they made.

And of course every “good little rep” for a feed company is going to endorse any feed you’re feeding or considering.

Just to clarify, the person I’m using is not with a feed or supplement company.
