Too old to get a puppy? update #44 Puppy has been sold

I did this, too, on one of our AWS. Didn’t feel comfortable doing it with a small breed puppy, however. She was enough of a trip hazard as it was. But, for a not-tiny one, I agree that it can work very well.

Late to the thread but congratulations! Colton sure is cute.

When I got my Nellie I actually looked at pee pads ( for the first time) and it had you slowly move them to the door. I just figured I would save my money and just take her out every 2 hours during the day or right when she wakes up as per all my other puppies.

Worked as it always has. Those pads are expensive but I can see if you are not home how it could be helpful. I am always here.

@Jarpur I wonder if my daughters puppy who was more difficult – she would go in my bedroom and pee/ poo on my dogs bed :astonished: had pee pads in the cage they were kept in while the breeder was at work??

I can see her being confused at first. Thankfully she got it but I had my doubts …

Wouldn’t be surprised.

Sounds like just what you need at this point – a companion in life.

@Cat_Tap, please keep us all up to date! I lost both of my dogs last year to age, and now isn’t a great time for another, so I am living vicariously through you!

We are settling. Another rainy day but we managed to pee outside first thing this morning. Couldn’t stay out too long because of the rain so pooped in the mudroom. At least he is doing it in there. Peeing and pooping less often now which is good. The frequency was probably due to the lyme injection.

Now the antibiotic pills are quite large. Couldn’t force them down his throat and he doesn’t appear to like peanut butter. Did remember that I had some liverwurst in the fridge. Pill problem solved as he loves the liverwurst. Now also eating his kibble right away.

Fortunately this rainy weather seems to be encouraging naps so I could shower in peace.

We are making progress which is very good for both of us. No time for boredom or depression.

You don’t want to do rawhide. It’s widely discouraged for a lot of reasons…including intestinal blockage risk. Yuck.

Are you on Facebook? Join the group called “Canine Enrichment Ideas.” Those people are amazing and have about 100,000 great ideas, products, and tricks to keep dogs busy mentally and physically. One of my favorites so far: freeze their meals! Takes mine 30 minutes to eat meals now, when they used to just hork it down.

DawgLady I discussed this with my vet as I did not like the large rawhide but he advised on a certain type (don’t know what the difference is) that was safe. What we have is a small very hard stick that he is chewing on and vet assured me that he would not choke on it. I do keep an eye on his progress with it.

I am pretty good at pilling larger dogs but not so much smaller dogs, so I started using Pill Pockets for our current pooch. They are too expensive though for an older dog like ours with recurring health issues that require daily medication. At her last visit to the emergency room (pancreatitis), the vet suggested stuffing a pill into a meatball made from canned dog food. It’s a bit messy shaping the meatball with my fingers but it works like a charm - she scarfs it down, pill and all.

A great alternative to this is putting Cheez-Whiz (spray cheese) on a little cracker. Hide the pill inside. Works every time for my dogs; they love it.

When we had to pill a previous dog, what was recommended (and worked great), was wrapping the pill in a piece of a Kraft American cheese single (the knockoff brand worked fine). Inexpensive and not messy.

This is what we did with our Vizsla. We ended up having to put it at the back of her mouth still so she wouldn’t chew it, but we made it a fun thing instead of a yucky tasting thing. “Cheese time!!”

Mine is too smart to fall for that more than once, I need a full menu
Yes, I have crushed and dissolved into beef broth and syringed the little jerk

The liverwurst works well, I make a little ball with the pill inside. He loves it. Problem solved.

1000% agree on rawhide. I was turned onto the beef hide rolls I’ve linked below about a year ago, and I am a big fan. They are super natural; you can actually see little cow hairs left on them. They’re way more expensive than rawhide, but dogs can make very little progress on them in one chew session (I let my dogs get them about 30 minutes a day), they can’t get any big chunks off, and they last a long time. My recently passed Doberman would get the 12inch roll and even he couldn’t get chunks off or chew it down fast. I usually order the 12inch roll and have the company cut it in half for my Border terriers, and they chew on those 6inch rolls for months. Again, pricey but worth it, IMO.

@DoubleClick, How different are these from beef cheek rolls? We like those a lot. Also very long-lasting, but my power chewer can get through one in 30 minutes.

Thank you for posting these. I just ordered some for my chew loving foster. I don’t give her rawhides and raw bones are messy. This is a great option!
