Totally Ignorant - Help Edjumakate Me - Re: A Poker Ride

Thanks to the drugs and Sore No More I don’t feel as bad as I did yesterday. Yes, sore, stiff and achey, but not crippled.

I just ordered my new helmet. Figured I’d upgrade to an IRH XR9…especially since it was on sale  I had an IRH Skull Cap which I loved, but twas always a pain getting a soft brim sewn into the lycra covers I adore. Sad to see my 2 1/2 year old helmet in the garbage can :frowning: But I like the look of the XR9…much like the Charles Owen GR8 but 1/4 of the price.

Poker Rides sound like so much fun… but the one I went on wasnt much fun. There were plenty of misbehaving horses, some drunks, a few yahoos and the worst part was that it had rained like heck so a section of the trail was very very slick going down the side of a hill. The horse I had at the time was pretty steady, but by the end of the ride, he was very stressed. There are a lot of people, they are going different paces so there is a lot of passing and being passed plus the stress of waiting at the checkpoints. He never blew up, but he had just about had it by the end.

I was game to try again with my current and more experienced horse, but it seems like everyone I talk to who has done poker rides has similiar tales to tell so I haven’t. I think my current horse would be much more relaxed, but maybe some of us just like quieter, smaller rides.
