Trading Aces sold as an equitation horse

Anyone remember Molly Bliss’ Roan Ranger who went on to a career as an equitation horse?
I didn’t know anything about this horse becoming an equitation horse, but I did see Mike Plumb ride him at Groton House oh so many years ago.

Yup.

What a blast from the past!! Cool horse, as was Up In The Air.

There was a great Junior Hunter named Murmansk shown by Joanne Houston in the late 70s who started out as an upper level event horse with Bruce Davidson. He didn’t have any trouble making the transition to hunters and lasted years in “hunterland” with no lameness problems.

The fact he made the switch so smoothly is a testament to his excellent schooling. There ARE differences in the way the horse is expected to go. Same as with Amber Eyes. The natural pieces were there, and very solid schooling in place, it just has to be redirected a bit.

We’re in the process of turning my (albeit much, much lower level) mare into an Eq horse. The dressage training has set us up for success, but we have to add some extra tools to get the hunter smoothness.
Sorry, that was the point I was trying to sarcastically make - there has always been such a stigma in the h/j world that event horses are sub-par. And that now “It only took a week to make him/her a real horse … an eq and or hunter, that is” could become a thing.

Does anyone know who Boyd is competing at Rolex this year??

He’s got 3 horses entered. Pancho Villa, Cracker Jack & Master Frisky.

Resurrecting this as it is pertinent to today’s sad news. Makes me so paranoid for my own babies that they can just die unexpectedly for no real reason except cardiac arrest which id how we all die I guess.

Especially since, at this point in his life he was living a much easier life.

Kind of remarkable that he could switch careers after being an Upper Level horse
like that.

Do we know where he was when he passed?

All I have seen is “cardiac arrest” and unexpectedly.

so sad. And a sad reminder that it can happen at any time.

According to the COTH article, he was in KY for Medal Regionals. He stopped out at a fence and his rider said something was wrong. They took him to three vets, he had abnormal bloodwork, and they scoped him for ulcers. No one could figure out what was wrong. He died later.
