Trailer Accident in San Jose on way home from Sonoma Horse Park

FROM THE FIELD - San José Firefighters take on a wide variety of challenges every day, including emergency response for traffic collisions throughout the city. This morning firefighters were dispatched to the area of Highway 85 near Cottle Road in South San José for reports of a major traffic accident involving a trailer transporting horses. Upon their arrival firefighters quickly set about assessing the scene and assisting all in need, including the horses.

Edited - not on way to Menlo but on the way home from Giant Steps Charity Classic.

That’s Matt Sereni in the photo, so yes, likely on their way to Menlo. I believe he is based down in Gilroy.

So sad. They’re saying one horse was pinned and is injured, but no further details.

Very scary photo here: http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2014/08/04/san-jose-firefighters-rescue-injured-horse-in-trailer-accident-on-highway-85/

Hope the horse is ok.

I BET THEY ARE GLAD THAT THEY WRAPPED!!

Passed it on my way to Menlo today :frowning: really sad to see and had traffic backed up for miles. The truck was heading away from Menlo not towards, so I’m thinking horses heading south from Sonoma. When I passed through a big rig had pulled in and they were transferring the horses, the rest looked totally fine from what I saw.

Anyone know what happened to cause the accident? Looked pretty bad from the news accounts. One of the horses appeared upside down.

Really hope everyone, horses and people, escaped with minor injuries.

They were on their way home from Sonoma. Everyone is ok.

wow so scary - trailing accidents are the worst! Very glad to hear that everyone is expected to recover. I am also glad that the horses were wrapped - and it looks like they did what they are supposed to!

And I am sorry - but I am going to “go there”. I used to live right at this exit, people drive CRAZY especially at the on and off ramp there - but here is the thing. Trucks and trailers are NOT ALLOWED on highway 85. We always have to go the “long way” around because even though our rig was a little two horse - its still bigger than the maxim allowed on that road.

Wrong place at the wrong time. Jingles for a speedy recovery for all involved.

I believe you may be mistaken about trucks and trailers not being allowed on 85. There are all kinds of exemptions listed when you go to the Caltrans Legal Truck website, including livestock trailers. Could you please clarify? Thanks!

I have driven the entire length of 85 3-5 days a week for 5 years and it’s rare that I “don’t” see a horse trailer and I have never seen one pulled over. The photos look like Matt was OK, anyone know how the horse is doing?
