Trailer Mats - Do you Really Pull Them Up?

My mare thinks my trailer is a porta-potty. Haul to a neighboring barn…all of 10 minutes in the trailer…gotta pee.

I have a Brenderup and rolling up the mats that came with it to let the floor dry after hosing was akin to getting a hold of a greased pig. I ditched those mats and replaced them with some Mighty Lite mats. Now I just pick them up (with one hand;)) and lean them against the trailer wall. I leave them up unless I am using the trailer.

Thanks for the feedback!

Yes, after every weekend use. But I’m kind of like that. And vice-grips and/or channel locks work as well or better than “C” clamps. And can be used for other things as well.

I have WERM flooring in my trailer so it’s zero maintenance, just check it yearly with everything else. I highly recommend it!

My Brenderup came with two mats, split up the middle divider. When I park it, I sweep the shavings forward under the hay bags, and flop the mats forward on top, so that the back half (where moisture sits from poop) is exposed to dry. I only fully pull them when a horse pees, or I need to take it in for inspecting/power washing.

I also have WERM. It’s awesome. When I had mats, I used Gorilla tape on the seams to keep urine from getting underneath. One strip across the top, and a strip on either side made it MUCH easier. When it was time to pull the mats out, the tape came off pretty easily. Hope this helps someone.

I have wooden floors with rubber mats and a thin layer of shavings. The horses reliably poop as soon as they get inside but rarely pee. My mats are heavy and tightly fitted and I have never tried to lift them but have our good trailer speciality mechanic check the floor from underneath every spring. I clean poop out after every trip and carry scoops so I can clean out and take the poop home if we are parked somewhere with no obvious disposal.

I park on grass unfortunately. So far things are fine. Trailer is a second hand Trail-et, awful name but very good trailer!

Not every time, but a couple of times a year we do a deep clean, pull up the mats and scrub the walls and floor. It’s important to make sure that the floor is in good condition.

I bought a trailer with a rumber floor just so I wouldn’t have to!
