Trailering with tack?

I fox hunt and haul tacked in my straight load when the fixtures are close (10-15 min). I do not put a sheet on, but I do cover my saddle. I don’t haul bridled, but I know plenty of people who do.

I always wait to get to the fixture before putting in studs–but I know people who do not. That seems like asking for trouble, to me–but I’ve never seen a shredded leg from it yet.

Mounted police do it all the time…saddles no bridles

For years I’ve hauled short distances with tack on, minus bridle, quite frequently. But I got a brand new saddle this year and even with its cover on I’m still paranoid it’ll catch on something! Funny how something that was once a non-issue suddenly appeared on my radar!

My lesson barn won’t haul tacked.

Girl friend that events and hunts, along with plenty of others in the hunt, will haul tacked, under a certain time.

She has always had a two horse straight load, and normally two horses on.

Can’t edit to add…so adding.

GF leaves bridles off, so horses can eat. Usually a cooler or sheet over top of horse/saddle to protect them in the trailer.

I trailer with tack to lessons if it’s raining and it usually is during the winter. PNW resident here too. No bridle, with a cooler or blanket over. I have a slant but leave the dividers open when hauling one and he’s such a good ol’ guy and doesn’t move around much when on the road.

I do it all the time. It really is not a big deal. I have straight load…but have done a slant load too. No difference.

I put a cover on the saddle or cooler on the horse. I generally don’t have the girth super tight–but snug enough the saddle shouldn’t slip around. I’ll reset the saddle and tighten the girth (sometimes still in the trailer) when I get there.

I do it all the time in my straight load, and just bridle when I get there. I tend to untack after tho only because I feel it’s more fair after a horse has worked- I just do it quickly, cooler back on, and load.

Well, as an update - I hauled out with the horse saddled up on Sunday. No issues. I did untack before hauling home, the weather was sunny so we weren’t in a huge hurry to load up.

That said, my horse was a bit off so we are heading to the lameness gurus on Monday, no riding in the near future til we get the issues worked out.

Jingles for a successful and easy diagnosis for your horse’s lameness exam!

One summer I headed a team of 4 ponies that were shipped to the local parades with harness on. I can’t remember if they had bridles on or not, but probably did. It was enough work getting them hooked with the tack already on.
