I have done and still in one mlm but I don’t force it down other’s throats.
If your trainer is not getting her job of training you to be a better rider then it is time to move on.
Be firm with her that you are not interested in being in her organization on Amway or any other mlm. Explain your relationship with her is to get training only. If she doesn’t get it, then move on to another trainer.
it’s the economy
everyone today is pushing everyone to buy more “stuff” take more lessons, etc. I was at a barn, no longer there, where the BO tried to get me to buy 2 of her horses (not even my type!!! I’m TB and WB) and then the BO when I refused, politely, tryied to give me one of her horses!!! of course she wanted me to board it there too. well I already was paying board for my 2, so I kept telling her it was too expensive and I couldn’t afford it. I finally moved. I didn’t have the quandary you have…if she is a good trainer, just keep saying you cannot afford whatever she is pushing (which is true) and don’t say anything else. each time say you cannot afford it. good grief, with gas prices and food prices now, everyone cannot afford it!

I remember one of the biodegradable soaps did a bang up job of cleaning tack and the horse and so on… Really! You are getting veerrry sllleeeeppy…
Yes! Now that I would love to have again.
If not for the dreaded salesperson . . .
Anyone remember that Seinfeld with the carpet cleaners?
I’m here to clean the carpets. Most of the world is carpeted. And, one day, we will do the cleaning.
Too funny!! I plan on having ‘the talk’ with her the next time she brings it up. She’s making me nuts!
Easy - tell her “Between the talk of ‘extra lessons’ and ‘Amway’ you are thinking about dropping her (in other words tell her the truth) BUT that she’s a great instructor. So how can you two make this work?”
If she says find another instructor - oh well.
Otherwise maybe she’ll stop.
And if she doesn’t (stop), counter with “do you need extra money?” (Infer she does if she’s asking about either thing)… then counter with - I can ask around for part-time jobs if you’re interested… and throw the ball in her court. Just be prepared with knowing about some part-time jobs so when she “slips” and approaches you again you can say “The supermarket has an opening for a part-time shel restocker”,…
Oops, you’ve hit on a pet peeve, so now it gets to come out of its’ cage…
Glad you love your lessons. But, seriously, what kind of person keeps on trying to profit from someone else after that person has made it clear that they aren’t interested?
If she reads body language as well as most good trainers, she already knows you are uncomfortable. That means she puts her needs so far before yours that something ‘just ain’t right’ about her. Or she isn’t that good at reading body language, and imagine how much better a lesson might be with someone who is.
At the barn, it’s all about the horses. At least around here it is, with some personal fun thrown in.OK, maybe a lot of personal fun thrown in.
Any other goals are just too much pressure.
Good luck. Maybe she’ll snap out of it.
I have first hand experience with Amway. My husband and I went to an “informational meeting” for Amway when we were younger and dumber. Holy cow, it was a nightmare. We thought we’d never get away from them. Can you say captive audience…and not in a good way. At the meeting you were required to list 20 people you knew, and that was your “customer base”, also known as “the people who used to like you, but now run in the other direction when they see you coming”. It’s very, very cult-like. With that in mind, your trainer won’t be easily deterred from asking you insistently again. And again. And again. The dealers are told to be persistant, and they’re given a lot of hype by “rich” people who have supposedly made millions with Amway. It’s sad, really. Mostly, desperate people will get involved in it. And don’t think just buying Amway products will make her happy. I’ll guarantee you that her ultimate goal is for you to be an Amway distributor under your trainer. So if you’re not able to stand up to her, you’d better be careful or you’ll have Amway boxes stacked up in the garage before you know it. I’m with the others, RUN like you’re Big Brown.
Maybe barter system? Tell her you’ll"let her" give you a lesson in exchange for free stuff??
I don’t think I could take lessons with this woman. She sounds like she gives you nothing but grief.
A stable friend sells Mary Kay. I’ve bought some stuff from her, but I’m really not all that interested. She’s kind of pushy about it and now I find myself avoiding her. I do like her but she’s changed since she got into MK. Very fanatical about the company.
Hmmm…wasn’t Alysheba, of the BJ Samwich fame, also a seller of Amway…? Does that tell you anything?
I do like her but she’s changed since she got into MK. Very fanatical about the company.
WEll, can you blame her…she’s looking for the ‘pink cadillac’ , crushed velvets seats:yes:
There’s a law in Texas, that if you murder an amway salesperson, they put it down as self defense and give you probation.
Yes, she was a pusher of Quixtar, the latest incarnation of Amway - same thing, pyramid scheme.
And, it’s not about the economy, it’s about greed on the part of the sellers. UGH
You must live in Northern California. 80% of the trainers up here have drunk the Kool-Aid. It started with the Szabos–they got the eventers in to it first, and then branched out to the dressage folk.
It is a cult. Once you are in there are two kinds of people–people “in the business” and everyone else. People in the business are the only ones that count. They show videos with titles like “Why rich people are the only truly happy people” and chant slogans like “Go Double Diamond!”
I’ve watched this company slowly destroy the lives and relationships and common sense of horsemen and women I had previously loved and admired.
Run away as fast as you can without so much as a backward glance. If the trainer is in that deep, it’s only a mtter of time before that entire barn situation explodes.
I am remembering a friend of mine who went to something called “forum.” She came back and told me that one of the exercises was convincing 10 friends to come to “forum.” This exercise was intended to teach how to “make and stick to commitments.”
I believe the lead-in that the mutual friend who convinced her to go gave me was “if I told you there was a way to sleep 4 hours a night and feel completely refreshed, would you be interested?”
There are some whacky organizations out there!
Does the trainer own the facility? Does the facility owner know about this? The facility owner may have some authority over the trainers extra cirricular activities.
I don’t envy your position…I used to work for one of those trainers…not a party.

She does really, really want one of those.
Luckily I don’t board w/her. I just haul in for lessons. It’s really sad though, when I started riding dressage (switched from eventing about 4 years ago) everyone just told me to stay away from her because she was a ‘whack job’. So after going through a couple trainers I ended up at a function she was teaching in and was really impressed. I mentioned to a few friends that I wanted to take a lesson and they warned me. I really didn’t think she wouldn’t take no for an answer! My horse has come SO far and I love my lessons, it’s everything in between. Late night phone calls once or twice a week, and at least 20 mins of discussion at the end of every lesson. She has done some other weird things too. I’m ready to say stop or I’ll leave, not sure where I’ll go!?! And yes, I’m in CA and I think she was originally sucked in by the Sabo’s!!! Everyone agrees that she has a ton to offer-if you can stand her.

All I can say is UGH! Between Amway, Mary Kay and Avon…one great big UGH.
Don’t forget Advocare and Arbonne:lol: oh and the latest I have been hit up for… EGNITE!
