Trainers and hotels?

I think the more usual arrangement would be for the trainer to make his/her own hotel reservations, and then just tell you how much you owe him/her. You might want to ask the trainer where he/she is staying, and then you could choose to stay there yourself (though you really don’t have to.)

I would just generically ask the trainer how he/she wants to handle making the reservations and billing. Then ask if he/she has a place in mind where they want to stay. The trainer very likely already has his/her usual motel for this show grounds (and may have even already made reservations.)

‘Crock pot’ pot roast, and lasagna are easy peasy to throw together a couple days before you leave, and even easier to heat in a microwave after a long show day.

When I used to show, by the time we were done with chores at the barn, all the decent restaurants were closed and we were too whipped to look at the pool.

If you do go swimming at a hotel definitely take an adult beverage, it may help counter act all the pee in the pool.

I would rather heat up my own food than risk loosing a show day to food poisoning or Norovirus. Especially when doing so saves the $$$ going out would cost.

To each his/her own. :)
What the hell even is this post?

Do you tell everyone who asks about professional fees/reimbursements to watch out for pee in the pool they in no way shape or form mentioned?

OP is going to RIDE IN THE HORSESHOW not sit by the pool of whatever Motel 6 happens to be close by while cooking lasagna via crock pot.

the very last thing I want to do before a show trip is prep food. I’ll do hard boiled eggs and some cold stuff for cooler-snacks, but hell to the no I am not fooling with a crockpot especially not in july!

the pool pee thing is meta.

We pack drinks and muchies for the day time, but nobody in our group is prepping meals much less cooking after the show.

I guess another benefit of living in CA is that they don’t roll up the sidewalks at 8

Crock pot lasagna. :lol::lol::lol:

Here’s another cost-splitting scenario–what say you?

Trainer accompanying group to show (not showing himself). Group consists of one rider with one horse and one husband/wife pair with two horses. Is trainer’s room split two ways or three ways?

hahahahahahaha

Why is this a question?
Three people equals split three ways. It does not matter who is a couple with who.

The question is under debate at my barn and, while there may be no ambiguity for you, there is for others.
If the price is the same whether there is only one person or two in the room, why would it bother you?
Well…because the girlfriend is getting a free room at my expense. She doesn’t work for me, the trainer does. He’s at the show to ride my horse. Why am I paying for her ?

It seemed to me they were taking advantage of the situation; I didn’t know the girlfriend and he told me at the last minute that she was coming.
The show was near a nice coastal town and they wanted to make it a little weekend getaway.

Since the room rate wasn’t going to change with her being there, I had no recourse.

Anyway it still bugs me.

Exactly.

The trainer should straighten this out in the billing. Bill riders itemized, including their share of the splits. Husband gets a bill; wife gets a bill. Certainly ok to combine theirs into one bill for the family, with all the items for each.

If someone is debating that a husband/wife = 1 person, they are trying to shirk their share of costs. Me, I’d call foul on that.

Do husband/wife ride the same horse at the same time? Or do they each get their own full share of trainer’s time and effort?

Personally, I would not worry about the room as much as the other ancillary expenses like meals.

Do they get free board on one horse because they are a couple? Does the second person get free lessons/training because they are a couple?
It works the same way with the trainer’s expenses at the show. They are two people with two horses so they pay two shares.

I agree (on the girlfriend tagging along thing). I would not be paying for the girlfriends meals. The hotel room is what it is, no matter who the trainer has in the bed every night.

Personally I have always felt splits of all kinds, hotel and show alike, should be done by the number of HORSES. If someone else is bringing four horses to my one I do not want to subsidize their lodging per diems. The trainer will not be spending equal time with us so why should I cover hotel equally?

However I am open to persuasion on the matter so does anyone have a good reason why hotel splits should be per person???

The amount of time spent with you at the show is covered by day and training fees. I assume the person who is there with three horses pays three day and training fees.

My experience is that things like the tack stall are split by the number of horses and things like the trainer’s hotel room are split by the number of riders.

It would make perfect sense your way too.

I agree with you on this one, but others in my group don’t. We split the tack room by the number of horses. We split rooms by the number of clients. Day fees are per horse.

The post in question is a reply to the OP who specifically stated they are on a budget. It explains how some people manage to show dressage without breaking the bank by staying in lavish accommodations. Why do you find the thought of economizing upsetting enough to warrant such outrage?

To atlatal… Yes in other parts of the country, were dressage loving folk live and show, restaurants often close before all the horses are groomed, fed, bedded down, and all the tack cleaned. Especially if it is a big show and you are one of the last rides, and the show facilities are on the out skirts of town.

jdobbs64… If you read my original post (# 20) Rackonteur had advised swimming in the hotel pool. As someone who worked for a public pool, I can assure you pool care is not what you would want it to be. You are basically swimming in other folks bath water. If that appeals to you…go for it.

The last line of both my first post and this one says it all. It expresses a philosophy that when followed helps to mitigate conflict.

To each his/her own.

Because you are snippily warning her about some random pool with pee in it when she in no way indicated a pool or swimming in one were remotely part of the consideration.

I am additionally curious why you seem to feel OP is at increased risk of contracting norovirus by virtue of attending a horseshow.

Do you think OP can not manage her own personal hygiene or something?

Btw not that you asked but you should always make sure to brush your teeth EVERY DAY to avoid gross plaque buildup and gum disease.

I think you need to learn to read for content, instead of for opportunities to start drama.

You know, I have to say, I approach these situations completely differently than most folks.

Start with this: what is my long term goal? If it’s to maintain a good longstanding relationship with the trainer, I ask how they want to handle it and do that if I can afford it. If I can’t afford it, I’d skip the show rather than make an issue of it.

It’s never worth screwing up a solid training relationship (I think everyone knows how rare those are) over a few bucks one way or another. I can’t even imagine being irritated that someone’s partner showed up and shared a room. You are already paying for it!!!

In the past I have roomed with trainers to reduce expenses. It was suggested by the trainer. Not something I would do again, for lots of reasons.

The biggest being that this is a professional relationship. You don’t want to start crossing all sorts of boundaries. Everyone’s feelings get hurt, etc.

Why does it bug you if he does his job for you and the hotel cost no more if he brings his squeeze?
