The rule on paying entries only applies to amateur-only classes. The rider could show in the performance hunters or something and could have entries reimbursed without violating the rules if they don’t receive remuneration as defined in the amateur rule.
I think if you’re that invested or concerned by all of this, you should file a formal complaint with USEF.
Yes, and the amateur only has to pay for the entries in the amateur restricted hunters and equitation. Not any other horse show expenses.
In Canada riders are restricted to showing up to three horses in the AA division. If competing in the AA they are also restricted to classes where the height does not exceed 3’3" (hunter and jumper).
I understand why they made the rule, I don’t necessarily think that it’s fair though. Seems silly that you can’t show horse A in the AA, and horse B in the 1.10m jumpers.
A lot of trainers would give their eye teeth to have access to a skilled amateur catch rider who wants to show a lot. It wouldn’t take long at all for that sort of rider to be in demand once trainers became aware of them.
USEF depends on Zone. Some allow cross entry to AO hunters and some do not. I had the fun of calling out Fran Dotoli on this one when she was coaching for a friend’s barn and couldn’t wrap her head around the fact that you couldn’t do it in Zone 10 if you could do it at Cap Challenge.
Zone 10 does allow cross entry to jumpers (through 1.25 m), medals, and eq exceeding 3’3”.
