I’ve found dirty bedding shavings work well. They freeze into the ice and create a surface.

Doesn’t that leave you with an awful mess once thawing starts?

I think it depends a lot on the soil composition, and for other areas (gravel, pavement) what type of clean up equipment you have. That said, even on gravel without equipment, it pretty much disappears once the ground is fully thawed and dried out.

I guess you are so right about the ‘soil composition’ mattering here because where I am it certainly does not disappear once the ground is thawed and it causes it to take longer to dry out.

Not sure what your temps are but if it’s warm enough I use coarse rock salt. I get 50 pound bags of 100% natural water softener salt at menards. Works great. But obviously need a break in the weather long enough for it to actually work.

That has been my experience too and that is just where it is spilled on the way to the pile!
