I guess you are so right about the ‘soil composition’ mattering here because where I am it certainly does not disappear once the ground is thawed and it causes it to take longer to dry out.
Not sure what your temps are but if it’s warm enough I use coarse rock salt. I get 50 pound bags of 100% natural water softener salt at menards. Works great. But obviously need a break in the weather long enough for it to actually work.

That has been my experience too and that is just where it is spilled on the way to the pile!
