BUT WHAT ABOUT THE GOLDFISH !!!
(I see what you did there, and I remember that thread).
I do the drain plug heater and then I also raise the tank up on blocks so nobody can stick their feet in it.
I hesitate to hack this thread but it involved my daughter asking, me refusing as fish eat and then fish poop. So in my thinking, algae is better than fish poop. So daughter was going to prove me wrong and dumped six fish into tank. Imagine pony “bobbing” for fish. He got one in his mouth after an hour of splashing, freaked out, knocked the tank off the tractor tires ( to keep him from pawing in it) and then fell into it. He then managed to cast himself in 100 gallon tank. So we lost the tank, 100 gallons of water and RIP fishies. He was fine …of course, only the good die young. Kidding!
Yes, Equkelly, we also have raise up the tanks, only we use large ag/military tires. The tanks sink in a bit and it makes them less likely to get pulled off in the splashing. Unless Fish are involved…
That is too funny!
i had success this summer using tadpoles to remove the algae in the stock tank. Raised a couple hundred baby frogs. Dumping the tank meant scooping out the tadpoles into a bucket, but those critters are hardy. Not like fish that die if you change the tank. And they kept the tank almost spotless. No scrubbing needed, just scoop the leaves, dump the tank every great while. They eat all the algae. They eat any bugs that fall in the tank.
I’m sorry but yuck, yuck, yuck! I would not drink fish tank water (or tadpole water) so I don’t want my horse to. I understand horses in the wild drink from streams, rivers, and ponds, but they have their own natural filtration system and a Rubbermaid stock tank filled with stagnant water and goldfish does not.
I never go more than 3 days without scrubbing my stock tank clean, rinsing it and refilling it. It takes not even 15 extra minutes. Clean water is one of the few things that we know reduces the risk for colic. It just seems absurd to me that people think the solution for a nasty algae filled stock tank is to ADD FISH?!? Instead of just ya know… taking 15 minutes to clean it? I’m sorry just blows my mind.
I think I’ll get the drain plug heater now. My guys don’t stick their feet it the trough so that shouldn’t be a problem. Thanks to everyone for the tips!
Yeah, that doesn’t work for every single tank swimmer out there.
”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹And having to drain a full tank in sub zero weather because the horse destroyed the heater and the tank is now leaking from the plug is something you really only do ONCE.
Are you using the 100 gallon tanks? Up on blocks and yours still stick their feet in it?? Do you have giraffes???
I think the point is - that what system might work great for one does not necessarily work great for all, especially when dealing with horses.
I’ve been here going on thirty years and from the get go I’ve always used a sinking, caged tank heater in my 150 gal. Rubbermaid tank. I use PVC pipes to run the cord through and it pins the heater to the bottom of the tank. No issues whatsoever, and those heaters last forever!
Yep, and apparently so 🤣🤣🤣
She’s very… persistent.
Is she a Palomino paint pony? Maybe they are related…
Pony in spirit only! Big bay TB mare. Whose purpose in life is to test my patience. 🤣🤣🤣
