Two New Rescue Mares

Merry and Joy are good. Feliz or Felice, Felicia (for Feliz Navidad). Belle or Bella.

And the reindeer are Dasher, Dancer, Comet, Cupid, Prancer, Donder and Blitzen (which are German for Thunder and Lightning) and one more, Prancer’s partner, that I forgot.

How about Jovie?? From the movie Elf? It’s short and fun. I had to come back to this thread with more stories of rescue and meaning. In my youth we got two horses from the Humane Society. Coming from a situation so dire horses died from starvation. Turns out one of ours was
straight off the King Ranch and do you know we went on to be my county fair champion or reserve year after year and that sure was fun. She also loved galloping through fields and the woods and she was so sweet and always sound.

I have more stories through my life and buying a horse with problems and figuring it out has always felt SO good and seeing the positive behavior changes and absolute GLOW a horse gives when they are at peak health and happiness.

I’d like to know more about your friend. Are you saying she is spending time at the kill pen and riding these horses and able to determine they really are ridable and just need another chance?

These were not my horses. They were my friend’s. She did get the mare back. The other horse had no way to identify him and went to the same auction as the mare, New Holland.

Scamper was a horse that was ridden in a feedlot, he wasn’t in the killpen waiting to be shipped for meat. The James family bought him at auction and he worked in their feedlot before Charmayne started riding him.

Oh thats good to know. If he was only sold for $1200 I would say that was a darned good purchase.

Thank you for the post. Good horses do end up in very very bad situations. Thats exciting to find that diamond in the rough from King Ranch! These two mares that I chose reminded me a whole bunch of the Two Eyed jack lines. (I’m a straight up Quarter Horse person.) They both had his topline, tiny, tiny foxy ears, short muzzle, thick through the nostril area, sleepy eyes, a tad thick through the throatlatch, short, strong cannon bones and strong forearms. The old stock lines. Since they are both from the CO/NE area, Im sure that’s their lines. They have been broodmares for quite a while but have been ridden with no issues at the pen during the 2 weks they have been held there. The ladies that monitor this kill pen are 4-H leaders. They try to save horses that make good mounts for the kids (no, they are not horse flippers). They don’t make a penny off of these nice horses. I hesitate to share their names since there are so many assumptive types that start issues with people doing good things.

Im not real knowledgeable about brands and chips. If a horse that is branded goes to slaughter, but has changed hands many times, does the original brander, come and gt the horse? Also, do equine vets do the microchipping?

Thank God for those 4-H leaders. I was thinking depending on how close you were to me that I might be interested in helping land some homes. I’m in central Ohio but seems you/they might be far away?

Some breeders will take responsibility for horses they’ve created, but most can’t afford to. As far as a working ranch horse that’s sold on I doubt it. I don’t know to what extent microchipping has replaced brands in that world. Many microchips are a dead end anyhow as the subsequent owners haven’t upgraded the data or no one has the right scanner.

I agree with you 100% and these ladies are making it quite easy for others to foster and support. Their hauling costs are negligible since they have sponsors that help mitigate those costs. If I find horsemen that legit wish to help and not “resell” I know they would appreciate safe havens for them until homes are found. I told them that they should create an organization here in the IN/KY/OH/IL area, where its impossible to find beginner horses that are safe. Then they can be handled and ridden and find homes with beginners and newbies. They are such gentle old souls. There won’t be any youngsters and probably no horses under 10 years of age, but they are very well broke, sound, affectionate, no-issue types.

Im in southern IN
