Ulcer prevention when using bute UPDATED in OP

We may switch after the farrier comes tomorrow if he needs continued pain meds

The vet opted for bute to offer the horse more immediate relief I think. Poor old guy was doing pretty well transitioning to barefoot until it quit raining and my paddocks got hard as concrete. Well I think that’s the issue but he could have an abscess or something.

Still waiting on call back from vet re his preferred ulcer prevention program. I had some Outlast cookies on hand and gave horse a serving’s worth last night plus extra alfalfa in turnout.

Is he on bute right now?

Bute without preventative (and Outlast isn’t preventative unless doses 4 times a day) is very much risking needing to treat for ulcers instead of prevent them. I have a horse here who can’t even handle a single dose without her belly hurting. They’re not all like that, but if you want to prevent, instead of treat, you really need to be doing that from the start of bute treatment

Yes he started the bute last night gave the Outlast within a few mins. More outlast this am. I can do 4 servings a day if needed. Breakfast lunch dinner and night check. I expect the vet call shortly ( I talked to him twice yesterday and am kicking myself for not thinking of the ulcers then).

I have Nexium and could dose him today with that if it comes to it. I am hesitant as the horse does have a few things already that indicate possible hind gut issues so he might be better served with the sucralfate… I’m no ulcer expert just obsessively reading old threads. Horse has “loose manure” ranging from less than perfectly formed to cow patty that’s noticeably stinkier than regular horse turds.

I thought the manure issue was due to diet changes plus his teeth aren’t in the best shape. And it maybe that those are the culprits. I had to reschedule his dental due to a work schedule conflict, but vet is coming 6.9 for that and rads and whatever else horsie needs.
