Ulcers- After, Maintenance & Platinum Performance
Has anyone ever used aloe vera juice after & felt it was beneficial for prevention, of course in addition to as much free range grazing/roughage as possible?
I’ve (knock on wood) never had a horse with ulcers; however, I have struggled with ulcers, brutal acid reflux, and a host of other fun gastro issues myself. I have - personally and anecdotally - found aloe vera juice to be extremely helpful in alleviating pain and discomfort from acid.

I just wanted to add a PSA. I have a horse who has been on full tubes of GG for 7 months and is not yet healed. Do not just stop treatment at 28 days. Get another scope to confirm it has done its job.
Agree!!! My horse took TWO full months of gastrogard. Make sure your horse is given the daily dose on an empty stomach. And not fed right after.
And then make sure you scope again.

The orginal studies showed that only like 80% (I need to check the number) healed completely after 28d. EGUS is a bugger to deal with.

At $30/tube/d that is one expensive horse!!!
Yup. Same here for an entire year I used a daily Succeed and 6 tubes of ulcergard every month. About $300 on stomach supplements only.

Papaya, Sweet potato and marshmallow root are all also suggested for ulcer prevention/maintenance…if you want to go a more eastern route with treatment.

Obviously check with your vet to see how they feel about these. My horse’s chiro/acupuncture who is a vet (and very eastern leaning) suggests them, but they aren’t for everyone. (and marshmallow root stinks. G’ah.)

My mare developed ulcers 3 years ago and started cribbing as a result (GAH!!!)
I treated her with 28 days of omeprazole and now have her on a very strict died. she gets little to no sugar, free choice hay, moved her to pasture board (as hard as that was for me!) and her “grain” now consists of a very small amount of soaked alfalfa hay cubes, a ration balancer, equine choice pre/probiotic, and finishing touch as she’s a TB and a typical hard keeper.
Prior to any work she gets 4 1000mg peppermint flavoured tums. Seems to be working quite nicely!

Hi!
It took me, and a team of awesome people and vets to get my horses’ EGUS under control. Confirmed through scoping, had plyoric ulcers. Was on a lot of sucralfate 4 times a day, 6 hours apart along with a tube of ulcergard for about 5 1/2 weeks. IMO sucralfate really helps along with the omeprazole, and it was the 3rd time this horse has been treated, but the first with the increase in the sucralfate.

Good luck!
