Hang in there, Sid. Jingles that your mind is eased soon. <3
Hopefully a permanent end to the suffering, the horses are in a better place literally and figuratively. Don’t beat yourself up Sid.
Don’t beat yourself up, Sid. But I’ve often asked the same questions as you when it comes to some of these abusers.
The farm name is so incredibly familiar to me, but I do not think I ever met this person when I lived in the area.
I grew up working closely with a highly respected Arabian breeder/veterinarian who used to do similar horrible things. Horses out front looked good, the rest were locked in dark stalls, often 3 to a stall, emaciated with no food or water. And he was a VET! I was a teenager when I worked with him and never spoke up. I regret that. He died a few years ago and obituaries praising his genius were circulating all over the internet, including here. I wanted to vomit.
Don’t beat yourself up- I pm’d you.

Makes one wonder how much this goes on. I had a similar situation when my teenage neighbor called me to come to where she was horse-tending, while the owners were away. Horrific. Horses hitting their heads on ceilings for the piled up manure and emaciated. The owner was a federal judge, whose wife was a pillar of our little community, no less. They lived WAY back in the woods so no one could see this. I did report them.
Then of course, there was of rescue of a mare/foal who was days away from death by starvation and dehydration at the hands of a big-name hunter breeder/handler up in NJ 10 years ago. Thank God, for that “tipster”.
It seems that perceived “reputation” of these people make it all the harder to understand.
Kudos to the OP for reporting this horror.

VERY much appreciated.

Sadly, there appears to have been a pattern of dead horses in stalls. Most of the horses were kept out on the “back 50” and not visible from the road or immediate barn area.
So sad. My husband delivered hay to her once about 5 years ago. Said how bad the property was (but he didn’t really see the horses, just the barn up top). And from the road, it’s a tangled mess of weeds and scrub.
So sad about the horses dying in their stalls of starvation. I bet the stalls were filthy too.

I believe it is not entirely accurate. It is my understanding that at her hearing she stated that there were no more horses on the property and she had entered a contract to sell the farm- for that reason the District Justice did not see a need to impose a ban on horse ownership- since she was “out of horses.” I believe she transferred ownership of her horses physically and on paper to a dealer who is now marketing them. That is- the horses she did not send to NH. It would be nice if the PASPCA would clarify this because alot of people are now up in arms about the situation and the PaSPCA.
That was a bad call on the judge’s part. Without banning her from ownership, she can own horses someday again and do the same thing.
I am so sorry Sid. I know first hand how much you care and how well your horses are treated. {{{{{HUGS}}}}}}

Thanks. News that another Argosy grand daughter, term PG, may have been run through an auction with some unbroke horses.
This is when you hate breeding or being any part of it.
As you know, I never sold any of my own…they were trained in dressage and opened a school here for a period of years. Very gratifying to just keep them here and allow them to be trained well, live there whole lives here, and give some wannabe dressage riders a great education too.
Thanks for your post. I think you “get” how one can feel dirty, even though you had nothing to do with any of this other than allowing breeding to who you thought to someone who you thought was one of the good guys in this biz.
I know all too well how you feel. I kidded myself into thinking if I gave my horses away instead of selling them I could be choosier about where they went. Dumb I know but it worked for me. I know where all of them are except two, I have been looking for them for years…
Laurie…yep. You never completely let go, do you? That’s what makes you a good breeder. The rub is that we think others think will care about them as much as we do. If they delivered them and raised them, maybe they would.
Nothing like it that makes one feel lifelong responsibility delivering and raising a foal. Sadly, one can’t have security for their life, unless they are kept. And yet, that can keep others from enjoying and loving that foal you brought into the world.
It’s a conundrum for sure.
I’m just glad to find out anything about Argosy offspring (and he had many) as people sell, change their names, don’t register with USEF.
I don’t have much info about any bred outside, but the few that are superstars in sport. I know some have been sold for $$, but with name changes, ownership changes they are lost forever to me.
But…they are not mine. Mine are here with me since my eyes became clear early on after starting breed how “disposable” they are …especially for the well-off who may buy them.
But still it doesn’t make me feel any better that in ANY way I contributed to have horses that are a product of breeding my stallion suffer in such a horrific way.
