Update: Rest in peace sweet Leonard. Vets or anyone : fever/anorexia in 5 month old kitten
We see a ton of cats/kittens with FUO - fever of unknown origin. It ends up being unknown because most people don’t want to spend a ton of money trying to figure it out. Sometimes it’s Babesia, other blood-borne pathogens. Sometimes we just don’t know. I’ve treated many symptomatically by admitting to hospital for IV fluids, anti-pyretics, antibiotics, and they do well.
We are at the $600 mark already! He is picking at dry food. That is what they gave him at the shelter. I tried switching him to wet and he ate some at first but when he quit eating, I put the shelter Science Diet back down.

Temp at the vets yesterday was 102.5. So better. We put him in our bedroom with the door shut overnight to give him a break from his brother and he can eat unmolested. His brother is 13 weeks old and plays rough. Not in an aggressive manner just pounce and bite. Leonard has no bite marks on him. We can’t neuter his brother quick enough.

Tried the Cerenia . Note to self . Don’t crush and give. He threw it up in 5 seconds. It must be very bitter. Thinking about trying Zofran SQ as I have some injectable.

No advice but I’m jingling for him

How is Leonard doing today - this Sunday ?

Jingles & AO

Adding my inquiring voice. Hope he is much better.

Actually he is better today. Playing a bit, following us around, brighter eyed, doesn’t appear to have a fever so no NSAID today. I would assume the one time 14 day antibiotic has kicked in on whatever he had. While my 13 week old is healthy, maybe Leonard got something from him that Lewis is not symptomatic with. Fingers crossed this is it. He is still eating small frequent meals and prefers dry food. Will still offer canned to see if he will start to eat canned. Thank you all for your support!

Good ! Good ! GOOD !!!

Be proud of your work/ efforts !

‘Lingles’ & Jingles continue for Leonard !

  • any chance of a Leonard update ~ it’s Wednesday …I think ???

TIA

It sounds like he’s on the mend but just wanted to chime in with a positive story - my girl stopped eating and developed a fever about a year and a half ago and she came back negative for every test. We treated with a convenia injection and subq fluids and honestly for a couple of days I thought I was going to come home and find her dead but on the 5th or 6th day she turned around and made a full recovery over he course of 3 or so days.

Forgot to mention - it was within a mo th or two of introducing a new kitten so vet chalked it up to a random virus that kitten was asymptomatic for.

His weight is down today and still appears to have a fever. Picking at food, eating some but picking. Called the vet . He is scheduled for an abdominal ultrasound in the morning. Hopefully will have some answers. If his ultrasound is clear, will try a round of doxycyline. His coronovirus was positive but globbulin normal. Vet said most cats are positive for coronovirus. All his other labs are normal.

We think that is what happened with Leonard. Think Mayans and settlers. Leonard is the Mayan! Lewis, who is asymptomatic, probably gave Leonard some bug. We had an ultrasound today and his belly looks clear so not FIP. Yay!! We are trying a round of Doxy and 3 days of Cerenia, an anti nausea drug. He also got a fluid bolus. He played more when he got home than he has in 3 weeks ! But he was tuned up so we will see how the weekend goes.

Fingers crossed that the medication does its job.

  • fluid ~ makes me happy !
Lacetated ringers - usually helps then ‘bounce’ back !

Jingles & AO continue for (expensive ) Leonard …

Bless you for helping hhim survive and thrive !

We did a 50cc fluid bolus at home Fri night. Fluid bolusing a young cat is not as easy as an old cat! He felt well yesterday for about 6 hours until the NSAID wore off and the fever came back. He is on my lap as we speak. He was 103.1 yesterday at the vet. I hope the doxy works. If not, I think off to a specialist. Infectious disease, internal med? $$$$

Leonard feels better!!! He was playing with his toys, running around, eating. YAY!!! He appears to not be febrile (not shivering) and more interested in food.

I hope things turn around and you’ve got whatever it was licked!

Just a couple of thoughts in case he takes another turn, though: did they check his potassium levels? Sometimes low potassium can wreak havoc on them.

You might also ask your vet about internal fungal infections (histoplasmosis), as I’m sure that could easily be picked up in a shelter. One of my cats had it, with symptoms almost exactly like yours. Took forever to diagnose and treat.

A chemistry was run and while I didn’t see it, she said all values were normal. I most definitely will look into histo if he degrades again. Was that a blood test that confirmed it?

Glad to read that the little guy is recovering. Whenever my cats had fevers, they totally lost interest in food. They’d start eating when their temperature started dropping. It was scary, actually.

Cindy - they just take a urine sample and send it to the lab (there’s only 1 in the US that can test for it). If it’s negative, it’s negative. If it’s positive, it’s positive - that’s the good thing. Treatment is a tad expensive ($350 for a two-month dose for my cat), but worth it.

I’ll call his vet this week. He still hasn’t gained weight and is lethargic. It’s been a week of doxy now.
