UPDATE! Strangles and EPM -High fever, food coming out nose... Help!

I would not go cheap on treating EPM, it’s a Protozoa that gets into the spinal chord, many horses host them but never show symptoms. It hard to get rid of, you need the good stuff. Really doubt it has a thing do with this food coming out the nose but Strangles or complications from it certainly can as its very similar to Strep Throat in humans. Ever had that, you know swallowing is difficult and painful but we humans understand better what’s happening in us then a horse does in themselves.

We treated EPM with Orogin (the cheap stuff), then Neuroquel, Protazil and more Neuroquel. The horse was fine after a few days of Orogin, but the titers were very high and I wanted to be sure the EPM was gone. Don’t hesitate to pay for multiple EPM meds, if needed. It is hard to know when EPM is truly gone.

I have had good luck with decoquinate combined with levamisole after several courses of Marquis.

The “cheap stuff” often works better and much faster than the expensive stuff…

It’s the Oroquin-10 I was thinking of. I’d heard it’s as/more effective than Marquis. I know a few horses treated successfully with it years ago, but it’s been awhile since I’ve had any EPM horse around me. Is it still considered the good one?

And do the "cheap stuff’ and “expensive stuff” have trade names?
