It’s not so much the rain water, but whatever it picked up on your roof that might not be so great. Hence just a simple filter should make it just fine.
I spent a couple of years in high school trucking water to the barn I rented for my (one) horse. No power, no running water, just one determined high schooler with a pickup truck and like, four 5 gallon gas cans that I filled up at home and drove to the barn every day.
It was not an ideal situation, nor is it one that I’d want to live with long term for multiple horses, but if you have someplace where you can fill up regularly, it could be doable for the short term.
Any local streams that you can fill buckets in? That’s what we do in an emergency but haven’t had to for years
I used 10 gallon collapsible containers from Amazon when my fool mare decided that she didn’t like the water at a place we go to do 4 or 5 day clinics. I got 12 of them and filled them with water from the barn, so way more water than needed. I’d recommend putting a tarp down in the back of your SUV if you go this route. (And my fool mare then decided that the water at the clinic barn was just fine, thankyouverymuch…)
Thanks everyone! We got water back yesterday! insert happy rain (water?) dance here
I really appreciate everyone responding with all of these wonderful ideas so quickly, this place can be such a godsend in times of need.
As to why we lost water in the first place - whoever installed or last serviced the line that brings the water from the street up to the house/ barn installed a split connector (vs a straight connector) and capped the unused end. Well the pressure overtime cracked the cap, then blew it off the end and all of the water started to exit stage left instead of going up the pipe to the house. The contractors were in and out in about 5 hours and said it was an easy fix.
