That is true if you put the bale the same spot time after time. Not used for horses that I know of unless you have a very large number but unrolling it and " bale grazing" with cows is a great way to improve your pastures.

They unroll it in a different spot every time.

A lot of the hay I buy has quite a bit of grass seed in it. So I could see with the organic material from the uneaten hay and the grass seed it could improve your pastures. But as you say it won’t help if the same spot is used and the ground gets compacted and the horses are still tromping on it.
